BEAR! in my back yard!

Yesterday afternoon, while relaxing at my house, I was alerted to a phone call from my neighbor. He said “hey, look out at the feeders”! So of course we did.

Now, this isn’t something we see everyday!

I live in NE Ohio. If you were to draw an imaginary triangle, linking Cleveland, Youngstown and Akron, we live pretty much in the middle of the triangle.

We don’t normally have “Bears” around these parts.

Seeing a bear is not necessarily new to us. Every year, my Wife and I take a vacation in central Virginia to hike along the Skyline Drive, do a little fishing and visit the many wineries in the area. An added bonus is seeing all of the bears up in the park. Sometimes we’ll see three or four in a day. However, seeing one here, in our back yard is certainly a Major League thrill!

This beautiful young male stayed for about forty five minutes. While eating just about all of the intended bird feed, he basically destroyed the entire feeder set-up. I recorded about ten minutes of video and was able to snap a few photos with my cell phone. Unfortunately, since I hadn’t used it for a while, my “real” camera had dead batteries.

We’ll definitely remember this for a long time.

While I know it’s not ethical or even legal to actually “feed” it, I just might have to make sure my feeders are good and full in the days to come!

Great shots, Jon. That youngster is very good looking. I think that the black bear has to be one of the most opportunistic animals of North America. Not much that they won't eat or places they won't go to find something to eat.

Cute little guy. They certainly are expanding there range in Ohio. That guy is young and probably just left mom recently.

Jon,

My parents were driving near Lliberty about a week ago and had a bear run right in front of their car, narrowly missing him. Cool shots.

Neat, I think, at least in your back yard it is neat. I've heard Ohio has quite the up and coming bear population. A couple years ago, one migrated north into Michigan and was seen wandering close to my parents place in Hillsdale county (though they never saw it). We get them from time to time on the north side of Grand Rapids...in another 20 years, they will be as common as coyotes...and coyotes will be as common as coons...and coons will be as common as...heck, they're everywhere already!

Thanks for sharing

DeWayne,

No.

I have about twenty minutes of video, Even some of him destroying the feeder, but didn't submit any to the news.
