Benelli's Duck Commander....

North Georgia, raised there and in Florida, and was nurtered in the traditions and customs of the Deep South by a plethora of Grandmothers and Aunts and Uncles who could remember sitting at the knee of men that fought against the "dam yankees" in the War of Northern Agression.....each of those "TRUE SOUTHENERS" blood was stained by the red Georgia clay that they spent their lives scratching a living from and their necks were as Red as the field on the battle flags that their Grandfathers fought, and died, under.

That qualifies me as a SOUTHERNER....one that knows that the RED of the DC's neck is as much an affectation to sell his calls, his $10.00 autographed photos, and himself as a Corporate Sponser, as it is anything else....for those reasons when I see the DC I don't see a Southerner I see a "huckster" who has crafted his persona as carefully as any other performer ever has......nothing wrong with that and certainly he has his following I just don't happen to be one of those that wants to see him as a "representative, a spokesman, for my sport" because in my mind he makes a mockery of it.

""A couple years ago you could get Phil's autographed picture at the Oregon Waterfowl Festival, for a mere $10. No thanks. I saw him once outside his booth. He was speed walking. I assume, so no one could take a picture of him, since he was selling them, conveinently. But,he did have a pretty good line when he was signing the photos he sold.""

Heck for 5 bucks you could buy some biker dude a beer at a bar and get a pic of him (and he likely looks like the DC) still have 5 more bucks to go down the street and buy an egg and a side of grits and feel as southern as you want. i was born in the south too, so I to have the lineage to make such polarizing(sic) statements. The DC is a choad.

i was more or less kiddin about the southern remark. when i see the duck commanders, i see a bunch of down to earth duck hunters that love the sport but dont mind puttin on a bit for the camera, and i find that entertaing, and im sure many others see it as fake and hillbillyish, and a ploy to sell their videos. what i see is a man and his family that have made quite a wealthy living on something they love, and i have to credit them for that. imo, thats the american dream, and i respect em for pulling it off, whether they come across as fake or not.
like i said, the southern comment was just in fun, i dont judge anyone by where they were born or raised.

Michael-
I judge – it can be so much fun.
If you were born in the back of a VW van down by the river with a cloud of pot smoke waffling through the window- well you might be a banker now, but you were a hippy kid. If you were born to woman biting down on a broom handle while stirring a pot of oatmeal with 12 kids running around the room - well your moms name was Lucy. Serious dude (see I can say dude cause I live in California) I don’t think anyone really cared about the southern crack - I didn’t.
Now I gotta get out of here and get to therapy, I need a double session today just to get over having to endure the fact I had to even see the words Duck Commander on the DHBP – sacrilege.

wait, dont go to therepy yet, you have to see my rig of STYROFOAM black ducks that i made, that i hunt over out of my layout...built from HOME DEPOT wood!! lol, i wasnt mad, just didnt want anyone to think im a northern hater...i love that nasaly northern accent!

Phil the Duck Commander is a total tool!!!! I will never watch anything he is in... That being said... I will not stop buying a product that I want to buy due to some idiot at that company making him a spokesman.

Then again I love my SBE... and don't plan on getting a differnt gun anytime soon!

I like what I know of the guy. I've never purchased one of his DVD's, but I do own one of his duck calls.
I have not seen the show and probably won't. Then again, I don't watch much TV at all.
He has a business and he is obviously successful doing what he does. I admire him for that.
I admire him for his faith and beliefs. Even if I did't appreciate his style I would admire him for that.
He is a good friend of my favorite hunting buddy. There is more to the man that what you see on TV.

I just watched what I would assume is the first episode. Think what you want about Phil but regardless of your stance this is one of the most enjoyable 30 minutes of outdoor related programming you'll ever see. Fantastic!

Jay,

I've sat on a response for a couple days (I know a show of great restraint, hold the applause). One thing I think you are missing is that Phil is playing to the same douche-bags that you railed against in your anti generation dux rant the other day. A hardcore and badass symbol for those same poseurs and they are buying what he is selling. What duckhunter accepts money for their signature? I'll tell you - a commercialized dickweed that is playing off chumps and fools. This isn't a slam on you, but a suggestion that you look at his media machine in a different light. We don't need him as a community and we would be better off without his fugly face as our representative to the general public.

Fellas, I truly appreciate all these comments. The show I watched the other day was very enjoyable...it was funny. I like funny. Sorry, that's how I feel. If that changes you can bet that I'll stop watching it. I don't own any of his DVDs and I've only seen portions of some.

Phil is ok I would share a hunt with him and it wouldn't bother me, then again I've shared a hunt with Steve and that didn't bother me either. Yeah the guy is out there a bit but maybe not so much in his town. No he's probably not a good representor of our traditional sport but look at all the TV shows. Even the deer shows are out there these days with the Waddels and such. It's the times and popular to hunters then again we know the sport and see it all as just entertainment. Lighten up Francis.

Ooohhh.....he brought "Lighten up Francis", back.....neato! I'm going to start using that again. Thanks Pat!

I have always found Phil to be entertaining. Not suprising since I am RNWT (50%)...........

He is a little out there and over the top in person though- little to much bible beating makes me sweaty.

Bravo Steve

Then again, a whole bunch of people have been doing the sport a disservice....

Look at an ad in your favorite magazine. How many dudes are smiling? Is it a requirement that if you hunt ducks you gotta look like a grim-faced, camo-smeared Gangsta?

DU did a book about Gen X hunters. Same kind of crap -- all about competition, "gearheads" and sunglasses. I even remember a pic of some dudes (A) blasting across the marsh and (B) on some big tank thing riding on the very FRONT of it...one slip and yer a jelly do-nut.

If Id done those things as a youth I would have (A) been laughed out of South Georgia and (B) boxed about the ears for being unsafe and sent to sit with the ladies in the kitchen. Then again, I was raised by quail and dove hunters and picked up Duck hunting on my own in my late teens.

But Ill have to give the DC his due...he is a showman that'd make old man Barnum proud

Glad this war between the states thing is winding down as the last on went badly for our side. I am sorry that people think that the DC typifies southerners and duck hunters just as I hated the fact that many up nawth thought Jed Klampett was the real deal in general.

It ain't about the killing for most of us in my humble opinion. It's about a beautiful and intracate dance of life that we are priveledged to participate in. Chances for killing are too far apart for people that are just killers in duck hunting in the US.

When I want to hear the gun go off alot I go to the skeet range and kill a bunch of those little black and orange bastards to assuage my killer instinct.

If you like Phil's tapes that is "your bidness" and you are welcome to support him and the companies he sells for. To my way of thinking his whole darn body of work is not worth one of our brothers here getting PO'ed at another one.

Diversity is one of the greater building blocks of our beloved nation,

I find Phil entertaining, just as I do Ted Nugent or Tred Barta. They are unique and different from all the rest out there. Being different doesn't make them bad. I am not at all like any of these people, but I would love to meet them and have a chance to hunt with any of them. That doesn't mean that I want to be like them. But, I think that we all need to be more tolerant. Variety is the spice of life. I am from the north, but was in the military in the south. That whole north vs. south thing is ridiculous. The army looks at everyone the same. Times are tough right now and we need to get along, not feud over trivial things.

Phils show aint what you'd think... me and tj watched the second episdoe yesterday. Its as good as any hunting show on tv, better than most. I expected a 30 minute version of his videos, and its anything but that. So far you've got to meet his family, watch them tear some crap up on a borrowed motor home, aruge about where to go on opening day, see the weatherman be wrong, and eat several meals together. If theres something objectable about those 2 episodes, I sure didn't see it. Then again, I like to see slow motion ducks explode in the right context, I never had a problem with it.

I think 'hating' anyone you see on tv or videos is a little silly. From the guys on pro wrestling, to the news people bringing their 'unbiased' stories to you, to the guys on your favorite or not favorite duck hunting video... all the world's a stage. You might not like someones views, or antics, but if they are in front of a camera, they're doing SOMETHING for the camera. 100% of what you see, or a small %, either way its a persona and shouldnt be taken personally.

North vrs south.... ha. I miss those flyway hiway guys. I thought ya'll all acted like that! bwhahahaha. travis

Personally I take Phil for what his is and that is a buisness man. He is not any different than many others before him who have promoted themselves for financial gain. A few of them would be Mohammed Ali, Dion Sanders, Minnesota Fats, Evil Kneivel. Some with Talent some without. Phil's schtick is well thought out. Don't let his antics fool you into thinking he is an uneducated hillbilly. That is far from the truth. In this case "what you see is NOt what you get" He has found a way to earn a living doing what he loves to do and for that I give him credit.
