I learned one valuable lesson about buying all sorts of diver calls to find the best.....best call is a good decoy set-up, black flag, and if you need to call just burl (or brrr as Brad mentioned) into a standard duck call.
I agree on the burr. In my experience it appears to work better for scaup than any other diver.
It may or may not bring in the birds but it definitely helps blur that fine line between duck hunting and sitting there looking stupid. (That is one of my favorite lines.)
I bought a lohman diver call, really didn't work my friends looked at me like I was nutz blowing that call and told me be quiet and wait. They were right. Its amazing what will buy to shoot ducks.
Gotta love that one!
I have an old diver call, no idea who made it. Sometimes I think it works, but other times its more like the line above.
I think the flag probably works better. I've waved my black watch cap over the blind and had small groups turn when it appeared they were going to pass by.
But then others have ignored the hat as well! (see above again).
Bought one after the season, from the Cabela's waterfowl sale.... it sounds good, don't know if it will make a difference.... when you are on the X it does not matter either way... but maybe in the fog? I like the old school style too.
