Two strong fronts heading all the way to through the Gulf and East Coasts this week!!!
We are predicted to be below freezing here in Mobile Saturday morning with a good NW wind.
Hope it pushes birds to everyone who is still open, setting up to be perfect weather here!

That is not the forecast here. Big rain tomorrow into Wednesday. Moderately colder behind that, but nothing truly cold.

I still haven't put on long johns under my fleece pants, and only broke out the fleece face mask once so far.

I want to break some ice!

Really?? Wow.
We're supposed to have a high of 49 here on Wednesday, and then highs 10-12 degrees below normal for entire forecast period after that.

If I didnt have to travel this week for work, I'd be taking off Friday to hunt:

A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 49. North wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Wednesday Night
A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 38. North wind around 10 mph.
Thursday
A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 51. North wind 5 to 10 mph.
Thursday Night
A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. North wind 5 to 10 mph.
Friday
A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Northwest wind around 10 mph.

mid 40's overnight tonight in upstate NY - rising to 50 tomorrow, with a south wind driving rain , cooling a few degree into Wednesday morning -

then as the curtain falls on the season Wednesday eve- strong winds out of the WSW and lake effect snow, they be dumping in as we leave the marsh to its winter silence

"Big Chill Coming! below freezing here in Mobile Saturday"

Carl you've been down south way too long! Up here we call this a week of 50 degree days, not below freezing temperatures. Way too funny! I bet when you lived up here (north of the MD line), you thought the same.

The weather has taken a turn for the worse here in SD. Mostly beautiful days hitting near 50 for the past week or more. Not so now. A couple inches of snow, strong NW winds (I can hear the 40mph gusts howling as I type this) and cold streaming down from Canada. This should finally push birds out of here.

A few weeks ago I was seeing a lot of waterfowl then it warmed back up. I was hearing that there were still a lot of birds being shot in central and northern SD. With lows in the teens and highs under 32 things will freeze up fast. I bet our lows get closer to 0 because the snow was a little more widespread then they predicted. Here we were only suppose to get a trace and it ended up being 2" that stuck.
I'm glad I can't go pheasant hunting tomorrow. It will probably be good but it will be miserable with this wind.

With luck maybe we can be icefishing around Christmas.

Tim,

Same here with the temp drop except no snow. I was on my local river fishing in 62 degrees. The wind switched direction and steadily increased all afternoon.
Highs this next week below 30.

Big chill already here...time to grab my blackpowder gear now that the rain has stopped and the snow is comin'!

Yep, Back in the day, we didn't think it was a cold winter night unless it got into the single digits!

Eagerly awaiting some freezing temps here on the NJ coast. I have a bone to pick with a few mallards.

So did you catch anything?
My brother and his son got out on a river yesterday before the weather changed in southern MN. I was getting walleye photos from them.

Just one small eater. missed several others that let go at the boat. Seemed to be that they were mouthing the bait but not sucking it on in. I gave them plenty of time, set the hook with a nice bend in the rod, fight almost all the way to the boat, then boom, they'd let go. Did boat and release a couple Northern.

If your up for a bit of company for a couple days, I'd think about accepting an offer to go ice fishing your way. (hint hint [blush]) I haven't checked to see what a NR lisc would cost me.

I pretty much just have one local lake here and it's more bust than boom. The good fishing in SD is north of me a fair bit. My really good fishing is when I mooch a spot off of my brother in MN. [smile]

Carl, hopefully the Big Chill will be worth it duck wise. This weekend is the opener of second phase for us and I'm looking at lows in the low 30s and upper 20s for at least 4 nights coming up.....that is just waaaaaaaaaaay too cold. I live in FLORIDA for crying out loud [laugh]

Tim,
No worries, we're making ice now,18 feels like 6 degrees. I'm just finishing up a project for my ATV I only use for ice fishing. I redesigned my front and rear racks to hold the equipment I wish to take out with me. Made a base and holding blocks from wood and its now in the basement getting a couple coats of paint. Need to put the chains on the rear wheels, mount my GPS to the ATV and I'll be ready to rock.

I don't mind fishing open water from my boat during winter, but a heated tent sure is comfortable.

I thought you did pretty well up Pickeral, Waubay area Tim? How about Lake Thompson? You ever fish over there? I hear it is a decent walleye lake though I have never fished it. Ice should start building now here. Over in Chetek WI, a guy who did some landscape work for us is going out this weekend. He says he will let me know how it ges. I'm ready for the ice fishing season - brig it on.

48 degrees and raining like hell at sunrise today. Temps dropping a little now behind the front.

I was in northern Maine at high (by eastern standards) elevation last Friday, and no snow and not much ice even up there. It's pretty unheard of for us to not have tracking snow on all but the coast for at least part of our rifle deer season, and we are now nearing the end of the extended muzzleloader season without seeing tracking snow anywhere in the state.

Mark,
I've only fished up in the waubay area in open water...and it's great then. I have some family and friends that go up there several times a winter and do well. The perch are something to see. If someone wants to go on a destination icefishing trip that is as good of place as any.

Thompson has been good for crappies in the past few years but I think that boom might be on the downward side.

I've watched a few videos of guys fishing on red lake and many small lakes in that area of MN two weeks ago. Some had 7" of ice.
I'm not sure we are putting on the ice I was hoping we would. The first two nights with fresh snow we barely got down to 20. It was 25 when I looked at the temp this morning.

On a good note for more southerly waterfowlers I was seeing birds on the move yesterday. I guess it's enough snow to drive them south.

Tim

30 degree 24 hour temperature change here in Mobile.
Went from muggy, humid and 76 degrees yesterday to rainy, strong north wind and 46 degrees.
Calling for a low of 28 Saturday, our coldest morning of the year so far.
