Black Brant III Build

Some pictures of my Black Brant III progress. Seems like the boat has been almost done for months but I am having fun. Will fish with it in the spring/summer. Hunt with it next Fall. The blind post mounts are aluminum sleeved with a bottom pin. Posts are slotted to engage pin. Used sch 40 3/4 inch aluminum pipe from onlinemetals.com. Nurail fittings. Blind is 43 inches high, 28 inches wide and 6 ft long. I broke the sch 40 pipe when I tried to bend it 20 degrees. Used my shop press and some wood fixtures. Rear posts are bent in two places. Frt posts bent to 15 degrees OK. I want to make a separate (lower) dodger style spray shield/blind that will use the two front post mounts. Next will be the canvas work. Got some "2nds" Cordura 1000 olive drab fabric from Rochfordsupply.com for $4.50 yd. Good stuff. Hope I can sew it with my wife's sewing machine. Not sure yet how the blind will go around the engine. Need to get it on my boat trailer, mount the outboard and then design the blind around the engine. I plan on doing a large block camo pattern with some spray cans. Maybe paint the camo pattern on the blind also.

Thanks Guys, I got my sewing machine out and started to read the manual. It is an old machine "White" that lists in the manual specs for sewing Heavy: Denim, Duck, Sailcloth and Extra Heavy: Upholstery, Canvas, Awning. Needle sizes 16-19 for these fabrics. Can you suggest thread size/brand, needle size and stitch setting for the Cordura 1000 fabric? The stitch setting lengths for straight stitching on this machine are 2 mm, 3 mm, 4mm. How many layers have you been able to sew successfully? Thanks

Daryl, just finished up some canvas decoy bag repair, sewing webbing to re-enforce the seams. Used a 16ga needle, and some really heavy thread. Here are the settings we used on our White Machine...

Hi Daryl - Wondering what you have planned for power? Looking at a boat right now to buy and even thought of a small jet outboard but most guys are still using props out here - the jets must clog up. Nice job on the blind part of the boat - like to see it when it's done.

Daryl found a local dealer last winter with the yammi 2 stroke and snapped it up.....before he even stitched up the hull I think......

FINALLY he mounted the bow light.....hehehe

If the blind looks high, it's because of the low sides of the boat. The height and opening are about the same as my TDB, which we measured before he started fabbing.

Daryl, whatever thread you use, make sure it's UV resistant.....I might have to borrow that machine at some point if it works out....my blind is getting long in the tooth.

Daryl's been bit by the bug HARD.....he'd never been duck hunting before Oct 2009 as far as I know. Building the boat, new Maxus. Once he gets the boat wrapped up I'm going to show him how to make his own decoys.....hehehehe

Daryl,

I have a White machine and used 16ga and 18ga needles w/ nylon upholstry thread (available at Walmart and most sew/craft shops) on Cordura 1000- up to 4 layers no poblem. There have been discussions on the UV resistance of nylon thread on this site before, but I've not had any issues with it (my original stiches are over 6 years old now). Some of the older Cordura has faded a little, but other that that everything has held up great.

-Bill

P.S. And the boat looks great. Well done!
