I’ve wanted to post some pics of the boat barn for a while now, and today it is too damn nasty to get anything else done, so here goes… Over the spring and summer I had a lot of good discussions here and got some great suggestions from folks like Pete, Lee, Gregg and Fred, to name a few. Thanks, guys!
Way back to July and getting the site ready, we decided to do the site prep ourselves. Of course it took a long time to get the structural plans finalized (and therefore the permits), so we were pushed right up to when we were leaving for our trip. I think we were grading the stone up to 2 days before we left.
Stripping sod and topsoil…
90 ton of stone in place, just need to flatten a little
…
The tractor with snow blade actually worked quite well. Given the amount of time it would have taken me to learn how to drive a skid steer, we were way ahead on that one (plus no rental fees).
Fast forward to November, we are back from the trip and needed just a little more stone to to bring it to final grade (bringing it to 120 tons).
Delivery day...
I wondered what he thought he was going to do…
Oh, I'm stuck...
The giant tow truck was a nice touch…
The forks for unloading were a sweet setup that came out of the back of the tractor. I was thinking that it was the drivers first day, but seeing him work that forklift from the cab (backwards) it was clear that he had done it a few times before….
Augering holes… They poured the footings for the posts as they went, since the ground was sandy and wet and the sides of the holes would have collapsed if they augered them all then poured concrete as they usually do. 24 inch diameter holes, by 50 some inches deep for all posts.
End of day one (picture taken the second morning before they started to work)…
They cut all the posts off level with a jig and built the uprights this way. Posts are 3 2x6 laminated, PT below grade.
End of day two...
End of day three… The front walk door was not where I wanted it. So they reframed it and we had to wait for new steel to come in.
Much better…
As it is now… I opted to install my own walk doors to save some money. I still have to finish framing the walk doors in.
Inside views… Much better organized now, having some warmer days to get out there, but this gives an idea.
