Boat build recommendations

I want to do a boat build for myself and a dog. 10' max length and sub 100lbs if it's possible. Preferably with a motor mount for a trolling motor sometimes. Something low profile and as stable as possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

If your planning on hunting layout style from your boat you may find 10' not quite big enough while dog aboard. My 14' old town twin heron just does allow room behind me for dog to have a space with me hunting layout style. In weight range your looking for kayaks are about your only option that i,m aware of. Bobcat boats does make some pirough style hulls that might fit your bill .

Sounds like you are possibly wanting a Kara or Kara Robber based on your description. It is very low profile, hides well, and very stable. can be poled, paddled, or use trolling motor if you put a motor mount on it. The Kara Robber is around the size you are wanting but the Kara is just a few feet larger and a lot more room and stability. I am not quite sure where to get the plans anymore, but someone else here might know or have a copy.

Wilson,
May be a little bit more than you are looking for, but a Devlin Broadbill is one man and a dog, slightly over 10', VERY stable, plans say 105lbs (you have to work to keep it at that), and takes a motor up to 15hp. Very capable boat across a wide range of hunting conditions. It rows, although I won't say I can row it well. It does do fine with a trolling motor, and I often though something like a Torquedo would do well in a duck marsh or conservation area. Am sure it would pole as well as a Kara and you can sit on the bow and paddle to pic up dekes. Easily holds 3 doz dekes. With the 15HP it'll do 25MPH, and the boat is sea worthy enough for good sized lakes and rivers. Originally planned on hauling in the bed of a truck, but it takes a good bit of effort to load and quickly decided on trailering. For the 1st picture below we took the motor off and walked the boat in with a rope.

Wilson,
Devlin makes the Broadbill which is 11 foot.

Uncle Johns Cajun Pirogue has a few simple boats that can be made in a week or two. I made one of his pirogues and use it like a coffin blind all the time. He also, makes Bayou skiff.

Google Hybrid Duck Boat. Pretty simple build but a small boat.

I am not a Kara Hummer fan. Much better boats out there in my opinion.

The Devlin Broadbill is a great little boat. Very fast and fun. A little bigger and heavier than you were looking for.

It's pretty hard to hunt a dog out of a 10' boat.

I know you said you wanted to do a build -hey, that's why we are on a boat build site. But, sub 100lb is hard to do in a glass and wood boat. I did a Glen-L duck boat and duck boat 2. Those were nice but bearable for manhandling they were not. You might be more satisfied with one of these Four Rivers boats.

The mini, migrator and teal chaser seem to be closer to your wants if the ends are more important than doing the build, I would 100% do this route.

Here is a tough boat, that meets your specs, other than building it yourself. Can add flap doors or a low profile blind to it.

The Kara Hummer is awesome to hunt out of and VERY stable, surprising load capacity (2 guys with gear no problem for transport, hunter and dog would hide/travel no problem) zips with a trolling motor, poles like a dream, and hides even better. I sorely regret selling mine and need to make time to build another, my next one will be outfitted with a spray shield, lap canvas and shorter/narrower cockpit a-la Steve Sanford. The only criteria it doesn't meet is weight, my hunting partner and I at the time were launching them stacked in a truck bed with a bed extender and they were a little heavy to get in and out for 2 guys in their mid twenties. Its doable but a slippery ramp/bank in the pre-dawn darkness compounds the difficulties and increases wear and tear on the boat significantly. The pair we made were our first boats and I'm sure a skilled builder would build lighter and better but my next one is going on a trailer. I have the plans and am happy to send photocopies if someone can verify the designer is no longer offering them for sale, I'm new here and welcome the chance to contribute to the group. They are worth the 30 or so bucks I paid and I don't want to undermine the fella that designed a great little boat that I really enjoyed building and hunting.

My suggestion is a 12' aquapod. I have had one for about 15 years and I put the Momarsh transom on the back and have a 3hp aircooled gamefisher that pushes it right along. I used it as an open water layout boat in Vermont and converted it to a marsh boat with flip doors when I moved to Kansas. I put the dog in an invisilab behind me when I marsh hunt. As set up its well over 100lbs but dry its in that neighborhood. My son is in the 10' with a trolling motor.
