Boat guys, fuel tank question

I installed a moeller underdeck tank in my starcraft, and I am expereince quite a bit of leaking of gas from the air vents. I need to mount them higher I beleive. However moeller marine isn't staffed today, so I was wondering if anyone here know the optimal placement and hose length for the vent tubes to be run and where should the vents be placed.

(12) twelve inches should work.

Need more info or a pic but I assume you don't have alot of height to work with.

You can probably forgo the tubes & just place (2) two vents in the bulkheads for through ventalation.
 
Here is a pic, the guy who help, had his vent a few inches about the tank inside the boat, I didn't give much thought when we were desgin this tank placement. essential the red dots are where the vents come out of the tank, you can see the vents in the panel on either side. They are slightly above the top of the tank. Right now I have the starboard vent fitting on the tank running through a hose to the port side vent on the panel. and visa versa. I can only go up maybe 4-5 inches above the tank if I mount the vents to the outside of the boat.

Should I criss cross tubes at only 4-5 inche? should I run port side to port side but move the venst forward towards the bow to get a few inches more above the tank. Or is this tank placement total FUBAR?

I'd weld the vents shut & place (2) two vents on the bulkheads.

You have little room to play with & it's only going to cause u more problems.

Remove the fill tube & make it flush with the deck.

Put a good quality venting gas cap on.

That's all you should need.
 
Well heck, of course you got problems,you got the tank up in the bow where it gets shaken not stirred, that's only good for martini's.
Do what Cap says and get a vented cap on there some how.
 
I needed wieght up front but didn't want it all the way in the bow, no way to get in under the floor. limited options.
 
I can't remove the fill tube, the molded tube that come out of the tank is at that angle and comes up an 1" over that deck. I don't have any bulkheads, I don't think. sounds like its not going to work in that location, now what to do?????.

Is that the actual tank we're looking @ or is it under that front deck.

If it's the acutal tank, is it metal?

If so, pull it, cut the top of the tank off just below level with the deck, weld up the vents, cut the neck off the fill tube & have a tank top welded onto it.

Then put the vented cap on!!!

I had the same problem.

I'll try to post pic's tommorrow of what I'm talking about.

Plug/cap the starboard vent, you don't need it.

Attach a vent tube to the port vent, run it next to the fill tube.

Take it to the portside & place a through the hull fitting/vent just below the cap.

This will solve your problem!!!

On the starcraft we had years ago the vent was right uner the gunnel so it exhausted outside of the boat , it looks like you have quite a bit of room under the gunnels. This way you will not be smelling it while hunting the boat . good luck with it

That was going to be my recommendation: run a vent line to either gunwale, put a thru-hull vent just under the rub rail. Cap off the other one.
Make sure to use a good quality vent and tighten it well.
Make sure the opening face aft, so spray does not hit the openings while running.
 
Is the spill due to sloshing around? Maybe you can put a longer hose in it and make a pig tail curl in it. That should fix it???
 
They make a fill cap that has a built in vent. I've used them before. The fill has two tubes. One for the fill hose and one for the vent hose. If you don't want to use that type then run the vent hose up along side the fill hose and mount a vent beside the fill on the gunnel. They make vents that have a valve that prevent fuel surge. I don't see any problem with the tank up front. You just need to get the vent up higher. It doesn't look too hard to me.
