BRANT HUNTING QUESTION

QUESTION FOR YOU BRANT HUNTERS OUT THERE. I AM PUTTING TOGETHER A SMALL BRANT RIG. HOW FEW CAN I GET AWAY WITH. WOULD 6-10 DO IT. I AM LIMITED FOR SPACE. THANKS FOR ANY INPUT. TIM

Tim, I have exactly three brant decoys. They will come in to anything black and white from my experience. Put out some buffies with them............................Kevin

I have only a few myself as well. If you feel you need numbers for your spot, use goose decoys, or anything really. Brainiacs they are not!

I hunt with 14 brant decoys when I target them. That is plenty. I do just as well when I put two brant out with my diver rig, when I'm where the brant want to be. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION... Your planned rig will be plenty if the brant want to be there. They decoy very well when you are in the right general location. I've never had any luck bringing them somewhere they don't have a history of going on their own.

Just like all waterfowling, it depends on how much they want to be where you are, and how hard they have been hunted. As the other guys said, they are generally very willing to decoy to other species with white on the butt, especially geese or drake mallard decoys so you can supplement your brant rig with other species. We have had many great hunts with only 8 decoys, but no matter how many decoys you have it is best to find a spot they are using, kick them out, set up and they will likely be back.

I used 6 last year had an honest 100 plus decoy to them in one pass! Location is what it is all about. We may all agree on this, from what everyone has posted and I have learned hunting them over the years. Where I hunted them last year I ran 6 brant, 6 buffs, 3 blk ducks and 2 mallards for my spread. However I did make 8 more for this year. The only reason is so when Steffy and i go back to VA this year he'll have a spread for his Sneakboat also.

4 cork floaters and 4 sleds, In my expereince that LOCATION is what its all about and its always changing.

The last time I shot Brant I had a 12ft johnboat and 3 guys in waders sitting in the middle of a mixed rig of black ducks, mallards and geese. We were skunked up to that point and a flock of Brant flew by us 20yds away... nobody had their guns loaded as we were picking up the decoys. The brant landed about 250yds away, one guy was mad and shot into the air to scare them away.... the brant got up and flew right at us and locked up! That lucky guy started shoving shells into his gun and had a few birds floating belly up before the rest of us could do anything, true story. Smart birds they are not....

Tim.....we had 5 brant decoys out and decoyed flock after flock this past January in Va. But location is always the key ingredient to sucess......Tim
