Breeding Grounds?

I'm not expecting any drastic changes in SD's pond conditions from last year. I think we are better off on soil moisture but we still haven't had any extraordinary amounts of rain or snow that are needed to fill a lot of dry ponds. We should be OK though. I did notice some ponds had more water last week then they have had for a couple years. I've been seeing plenty of mallards and teal around so that is good.

I did hear a lot about Canada being covered with a lot of snow early so hopefully that translates into good habitat.

We are not a traditional breeding ground here in the UP. But we have had a very drawn out winter with reasonable snow fall. Add to that the rain that we have received now that spring has finally arrived and the water here in the Wester UP is as high as anyone I have talked to has ever seen it. Our lake is filled to the brim and over its banks in some parts.

Lots of places for the ducks to feed rest and nest right now and we are seeing lots of birds.

My area of South Central ND has had a good amount of rain the last few weeks. We however were fairly dry before that, and is possible like last year that we were dry as the ducks were coming through and they continued on northward. Up to the last few days its been cold and wet, so any nesting will be a bit later than normal. I have seen a lot of Pintails this spring and duck number seem to be good not great, but there is a lot of water around to spread them out. Our biggest problem will be habitat farmers are still plowing anything then can.

The recently passed Farm Bill won't slow that down much...

Carl, thanks for the posting these links!!

Check out the updated flight and ground reports on the DU website, very useful and informative. Much better than the BS posted by folks during the seasons.
