Breeding pairs

This morning I decided on a whim to grab a few minutes with the camera in the marsh. I have tried many times to get close to the wood ducks and not been able to do so without spooking them. For some reason, this morning I hesitated before stepping onto a small wooden bridge and finally got the chance.............

In another part of the marsh I came across a mallard pair in very nice early light -

It looks like the geese have beat the others to nesting -

Last night when I set up a post about woodies not being the only colorful birds, I never dreamed I would get this chance this morning.............This morning when it happened, I had the sense that it was not a coincidence !

Dick, love the 4th pick of the woodie drake, apparently trying to give you the eveil eye, and stay away from my hen stare.

Thanks.

I grabbed that sipping mallard pic for a decoy pose....cool shots!

Hi Bill -

Glad I can be of help. They might be filtering out little stuff to eat when they swim along like this.... I am not sure.

Hi Paul - this is the area that I mentioned for setting boxes through the ice but last winter was too warm. There is a beaver in this place that HAS to weigh 50 #s........it just swims under and through the hummocks like a amphibious tank.

I sure like those pairs, Dick. Nice work.
Thanks.

Hi Al - We may get above 60 later this week and it may bring the herons and others into this area. Have you seen the hummers yet ?

Dick,
On April 6th, Bev saw the first hummers. Looks like we might have about 10 or so around here right now and all of them are the black-chinned variety.

Excellent pictures. Many times while jump shooting woodies from my Aquapod I would think for a split second before raising my shotgun to my shoulder that perhaps one day I should bring a camera instead, I know a place or two in Jersey where you can get up close to them if you're real quiet and let the current/tide take you.

Dick, I forgot to ask you if all of these shots were taken with the new 200mmL lens? If so have you added a 1.4 extender to it or not? I sure like the quality of your pictures.

Hi Anthony - I don't know if it's just me but when I take the camera.......... it's very much like hunting...... either over deeks, stalking around or sitting in a likely spot.

Al - this group is the 400. I did find a place to set up a stool etc. that may be perfect for the 200 and plan to give that a try. Have to wait a bit on any extender. I am also thinking that in a few weeks when I start fishing offshore that the 200 might be great for whales,
