Bummer of a morning

Got up early and headed out to do some huting. Got to the rampo, boat in the water and everything loaded. I was the only one there and it was going to be a great morning. Until I tried to start the motor. Would not turn over at all. Gas line is brand new, gas is fresh, new plugs. Ran a few days ago and a couple of times earlier in the season. Bummer

Called local shops and all are backed up a month or more. Called one about 15 miles from wehre I was and they said bring it in and we can have it back tomorrow evening. Drove over and one of the mechanics came over to see if he could get me my boat back right away (was a duck huntr). He tested spark, getting gas, compression, sprayed carb cleaner into the carb, sprayed starting fluid - all to no avail. He is thinking gummed up carb or the timing pin (may not have the term correct) is off just a little bit.

Said he will get into today or early tomorrow and have it back to me in the evening. Hopefully this is the case.

Never been to this plavce nor have I heard of them. Small town WI. Place was busy but all older boats and motors (mine is a 1996). Seemed to know what he was doing and how bad can the motor be if everything checked out that could be real bad (compression) and the motor ran good prior to this morning. I have zero time to figbure this oujt on my own (and zero desire)

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Mark,
I know what is wrong with your motor,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, it's broke. I'll send you a bill for my consulting fee.

Look on the bright side. It could have conked out when it was time to get back to the ramp.

Or when you were on your way out for one of those mornings that we all dream about, new ice, cold temps, fresh birds and you stuck in the middle of the bay on a dropping tide with a non working motor.

Good morning, HD~

Your consulting is....incomplete ?

Back in the day (at work at DEC), we would charge (but never be paid for) hefty consulting fees for: "It's broken AND it needs to be fixed."

Much more helpful - don't you agree?

All the best,

SJS

That sucks Mark.

This might be something you looked at already but what about the kill switch? I have a motor that the kill switch is a little off. I put the key on the kill switch but then have to wrap the cord around the switch to pull it out far enough for it to allow the motor to work.

Just a thought. Also hope you do get your motor back when they say you will

Yep, thats always a real bummer, especially when it happens at the ramp.

When my 25 Merc did this, it was the stator, under the flywheel, that had went bad.

Check is in the mail Dave and Steve.

Didn't get the motor back today. It is getting spark and gas. . Does not want to turn over at all which suggests timing is off or spark is insufficient. Pin on the flywheel is good. Carb is spotless and reeds are good. He ordered a new powerpack as this can sometimes have something to do with timing and spark strength according to him. Hope he is right.

Didn't think stator. Any other suggestions? Make that free suggestions.

Mark, better days are coming! You have it drilled down pretty good. I did have a stator go bad several years ago on a late 90's Merc 9.whatever , and that was the only problem I ever had with it. If it's the powerpack as soon as they get one it will be running and you will be hunting and then you'll be smiling.
