I have done quite a lot of sneaking up on Ducks. I have been busted, and dusted off by them on a number occasions for no reason I could tell visually, or by sound. That is interesting to me, and includes a number of Species. A Duck would have to know what they are smelling means danger, and that must be learned IMO. So just because a Duck, or Goose can smell you doesn't necessarily mean they'll know they're in danger. If they indeed can smell...
I know of Geese that will come into a Field being combined at night while the Harvesters are at work. There must be some cue that the Birds are picking up. Sound, and sight may well be it, but in the dark is the sight, and sound of Combines transecting a Field alone the reason Birds come in to feed???
Very interesting topic.
