Check out this beauty that I came across on my way out of the turkey woods today....he rattled at me and everything...and talk about FAT! If I had wanted to pick him up (which I didn't) it would've taken both my hands to wrap around his girth...I believe this is a Cane Break Rattler...really pretty...

Even if the turkeys aren't cooperating, at least there is almost always something new and exciting to see out there in the turkey woods...

Dani I hunted deer in the northern part of FLA once over a thanksgiving weekend. The giat Banana Spiders scared me half to death, I've never seen a Rattler, I think I could deal with him. I've been invited many times to come back and hunt, some how I always found an excuse not to go

Geez Louise! As I was saying:

"Seems like everything down south can bite ya, sting ya, or drag you underwater and eat ya.

I've always appreciated living safely here in Michigan with the deer and bluegills and garter snakes."

In my opinion, it took a lot of restraint to keep your finger off the trigger...but thats just me

I lived a year in Michigan. My slogan for the state was the bugs that don't bite, will sting. Horse flies, deer flies, black flies, mosquitos, no-see-ums. All we get here in Astoria is mosquitos. But we also had 140 mph wind two winters ago, maybe it blew all the biting flys to Michigan. I think Michigan was a great State, but I sure didn't care for all the bugs.

The only good snake is a dead one, I was nearly bitten twice by Bamboo crates while I was in Honk Kong, if one ever gets in front of me in future its gets a barrell of 3" right up the Kiber and no quetions asked, Snakes I hate them.
Eddie.

Gives me the chills.

We have rattlers of seversal varities in eastern NC. I've never seen one that big here. ( We have plenty of monster sized Cottonmouths).Saw some big ones at Ft. Stewart Georgia that would rival that cane break many years ago. We can't legally shoot snakes in NC anymore or gig frogs. I'd hate to slip into those Turkey woods in the dark knowing that bit of death was still out there.

Danibeth I hope you buy and use some snake chaps. I know the late Steve Irwin would be horrified but I might woulda shot that one.
Be careful out there,
Harry

Dani,
That is in fact a Cane Brake Rattlesnake. Usually they only get to 4-5 feet or so, but some will get bigger. I know of one that was right at 8 feet long, killed by a neighbor when I lived in North Louisiana around Ruston. You mentioned the colors. That picture really doesn't show how colorful they are. One that has just shed will have several different colors that can be striking. Mostly they will let you just walk right on by and you may not even know it was there. But some will develop an attitude and try to show off some.
Knowing that they can be there when going hunting sure adds an extra someting to the hunt don't it.

they have that color for a reason

but I think Copperheads are pretty too !

Dani , you never cease to amaze! I have 6'4" hunting partners that would have run off to find the screaming little girl was them!

Pretty snake indeed. No reason to kill a snake out in the woods unless you have a use for it, it's not like it was hiding in a garage or under a porch.
My turkey hunting hasn't involved anything nearly this interesting... at least not yet.

To,

I'm with you Scott everything down there bites. The Spiders are enough to keep me away. Those Banana Spiders build webs 20' across

Awww well that guy didn't do anything to me. No reason to send him into Never, Never Land. But I didn't torment him, other than making him pose for pictures...once he had his fill, he slithered off into the woods again.

And I HATE spiders...especially when it's dark out, we're in the canoe and I"m up front and get to be the person who gets to "clear the way" for the person(s) behind me. OOOOOOGGGGGGGIIIIIIIIEEEEEEE Spiders are ok, so long as they aren't near me.

I've got boots that I'm fairly certain are snake proof...used to have "snake boots" but no more, due to too many manufacturers defects...so I got me a pair of Lacrosse Burly's...hopefully though I never have them tested to see if they are snake proof. But as big as the snakes I've seen out there, they'll be striking higher than any snake boot I had or have...hell I need chaps...

Dani,
Did you know that scientists have determined the average person in no more the three feet away from a spider at any time? Makes ya think. :-)

Tim

Tim-

I don't seem to be the 'average' person...they seem to pop up everywhere around me...I've got one or two that make a living in my truck. Of course that's what I get for leaving the windows down or cracked most of the time. But the ones that REALLY get me going. I mean hollering for someone to come take care of them, get them out of the house, are the big, giganto wolf spiders that make their homes up in my attic. I don't care if they live up there. But when they crawl out of the ventilation thingys in the ceiling and down the walls? And they're HUGEMONGOUS...their leg span is five inches across! OOOHHHHH Boy, you can bet that I won't be sleeping, eating or staying in that room until someone other than me kills those suckers.

If the little spiders want to make a living in a corner of the room, behind a bed...well I can deal with it, so long as they aren't of the really poisonous variety...but if they even set one single foot on my bed...they're toast.

Dani

Harker teased me about my .410 Cowboy revolver...now I know what it was really for.

Its a 5" SPIDER GUN!!

I am saying it once again...I dont want to live where bugs that should be 1/2" long get up to 5" wide.

Every bug should be stepponable if it becomes a threat. I dont like it when they fight back
