Canada Trip

Made my first trip to Saskatchewan Canada last Monday and got in four days of hunting until I had to head home a couple days early due to more wildfires and evacuations here in the county.

We had great weather and met some of the nicest folks you will ever meet, I have never had farmers so eager to let you hunt on their land, the only thing I didn't get the chance to do was to duck hunt some of the ponds we saw, the duck and goose numbers were very good, next trip I'll bring a marsh boat and a couple dozen duck decoys, saw lots of Cans, Redheads and Scaup, not to mention the huge numbers of mallards, pintails and widgeon.

Here is a shot out scouting fields for the first day of hunting

I was able to harvest two blue phase snows the first day, here is Butch with them

The first morning out Rob and my Cousin George and I were able to get 3 limits of white geese, George has hunted the area for years and was a wealth of knowledge about getting set up right as I'm not an experienced snow goose hunter

We hunted the same field the second day and did well as we could with no wind and high flying flocks.

For the third day we had scouted a pea field and got permission to hunt, that morning we shot snows , Canada's and a couple Pintails, it was an absolutely perfect hunt with the birds working well.
We had 15 minutes in the layouts before legal shooting time with hundreds of birds in the decoys.

Later that afternoon Rob and I were able to take our first Sandhill Crane's

The fourth day we hunted a new field that had about 4000 birds in it the night before. We were able to take a mixture of Snows, Ross's, Canada's and Sandhill's

I'm already making plans for next year, I plan on getting a camper and staying out in the hunting areas rather than motels. It was truly a great way to kick off the 2012 season

Make it a big trailer Fred....you'll get lots of friends requests.

Glad you had a great trip. Tired of cleaning geese yet?

What beautiful country you were in. Since I can't count that far, what is the limit on light geese in Canada per day? It had to be wonderful to meet so many good people there. Out of curiosity, Fred, how far was it to your destination from home?

Al the limits on white geese is 20 a day and 8 on any dark geese and 8 ducks a day of which 4 can be Pintails. It's about 1000 miles up there from home, with two guys splitting the driving it's not to bad

Brads I'm a goose cleaning , wrapping and labeling machine!!, the kids shot a couple elk while I was gone so tomorow night is cutting and wrapping time !! at least I'll have some steaks to cook you in the boat this winter.

Wow! Looks like you had one heck of a trip!

Great pictures Fred. Looks like a super trip. I agree, hauling a camper there would be sweet. You could camp right where you wanted to hunt.

Brilliant trip fred, what a life you lead... Salmon fishing fire fighting and now snows and cranes.. Hope you won't be to bored when you retire, good job your going to retire. You may be able to squeeze a sleep in or 2.

You have everyone envious of you and the local knowledge of the area was a big help by looks of it. You guys out-west have a lot of great hunting within reasonable travel distance. With all those birds in the air I can see why the farmers are eager to let you hunt. Great start to the season.
