Canoe/kayak rack attached to garage

I want to hang/store 3 canoes/kayaks on the side, outside, of my garage. Anyone have plans or a picture I can use as a reference?

Gary~

Not sure this will help. I put 2 canoes of the back of our car barn - but the barn's 40' long so I hang them in-line. The height of the rack is about the same as the rack on my Element - so I avoid lifting. I pull up right next to it and slide it left and right, on and off.

If you make a 2 or 3 decker, you would probably need to make the knees much shorter - but there's not much weight so it would probably work.

Simple brackets made from treated 2 x 4. The long threaded ends of the lower carriage bolts are not a mistake - I hang my aluminum extension ladder on them.

Another benefit of hanging the canoes so high: I can inspect them for wasp or yellowjacket nests before I grab one in summer or early fall.

I intend to store a ladder on the bottom too. What I'm looking for is how much I can minimize the knee support angles. My canoes are pretty light. One is a Sportspal and the other a 10' Oldtown pack canoe I took the seats out of. I use it sitting on a cushion with a kayak paddle.
Going by myself I mostly use the Oldtown.

Gary~

I think knees that come out 12 inches (on the vertical and horizontal) would suffice. The "arms" on mine are about 40 inches long.

Dave~

I used to lash them down - with just decoy line. But, I have never had a problem. They are on the east side of my barn - so never get the full brunt of the west or NW winds. Otherwise, I would still lash them. (I'd put small cleats right on the arms.)

Steve,
The barn siding looks like art work. How long has that barn been around? If you could deliver to Illinois, I would like a truck load of the stone you have at the bottom of the barn siding.

Good morning, Richard~

I'm glad you enjoy the east side of the barn. As it turns out, the boards are only about 20 years old. The previous owner had new rough-sawn White Pine put on a year or two before we bought it in '96. I have no plans to paint it!

The field stones probably go back much further. The farm itself goes back to 1825 - and we're pretty sure the house is of that era. The barn construction is post and beam so could be anytime since then.

All the best,

SJS

My rack will have a northern exposure & living in coastal Rhode Island I would have to strap down everything on the rack.
Doug - I think I found the racks you use here: www.packemracks.com. For 30 bucks or so pretty economical. Also a plus that they pivot out of the way when not in use but what is the measurement from keel to gunnel?
The product description says kayak or canoe but your picture & website's show only kayaks and kayaks have rounder cross section "lines" than canoes & a canoe might sit too high.

Gary

The racks I have are non moveable(I have seen the one you are talking about) and deep cradled, I believe they will fit well if hung side down like a kayak
I have three boats on that wall , the top is a poke boat, the one you can see is my Ocean kayak and the bottom one is a carsten pintail.
each rack is positioned to fit each boat.
