carving cypress knees for decoys

I cut some knees in south carolina's santee swamp several years ago. Light light wood. BUT dang tough to cut or file! Anybody have imilar experiebce? I finally made a decoy from it but did it all with power - bansaw to grinder to foredom to dremel. And I like carving better but I could not carve this wood. Maybe it's not cypress??? thanks for any feedback. I will try to post some pics.

bill, that is cypress,

the knees for whatever reason are tough and full of resin like you experienced. If you ever get a chance to get the actual root, as in from under the ground, that is the preferred Cajun wood. It is usually light and carves similar to light tupelo.

The level of finish does not necessarily determine how effective a decoy functions. The true judge of a decoy is a duck.
