Cast iron? Herters decoy anchors

Post up a couple pictures. I have a few of 2 different styles. If you have something different maybe we can swap a couple?

They are all this style, just 2 different sizes. I was tickled to come across these. TN has plenty of duck call history, but is seriously lacking in the decoy and boat history department.

Here is some info from the 1966 Herter's Catalog. Not sure when they first offered these - wish I still had my Dad's Herter's catalogs from the 1950s.

They most certainly are collectible. When I would attend many of the decoy shows, I was surprised by how many folks collect them. I've seen some very impressive displays of collections as well.

Michael - I wish I could help, but I have no solid facts to provide. Cast iron decoy weights are not that common. A honest old decoy dealer or auction house may be able to help you. Or as many say, whatever someone is willing to pay.

Steve, you sure brought back some fantastic memories. I used that 1966 Herter's catalog for the first time when I moved to Alaska from Minnesota that year. I found out how good the dyed polar bear hair they were selling worked on the salmon flies I learned how to tie.. That was my bible up there. It was that year that I also found out about REI.

Good morning, Al~

I have been gathering up old Herter's catalogs in recent years - trying to cover both my own era and my Dad's. I have a few from the 50s and recently got the first one they published right after WWII. Of course, I focus on the decoys and related gear. In addition to bringing back many fine memories - of the hours "invested" in wishing and planning - these help me nail down the history of their various models. It's been a fascinating journey.

lot pop up on ebay. these are fairly common despite not being in production for a lot of years. collectable, tradeable, yes. I have seen these sell from from 5 to 15.00. mostly in the middle of that range. as with any "collectable" the price is determined by the amount a buyer is willing to pay. depends on condition, rarity. I think they made some larger say 12 ounce sizes that are attractive to some big water and costal waterfowlers. these are less available than the more common 8 and 10 ounce sizes. I have herters catalogues from the 50's 60's and 70's will take a look see what they all offered.

I buy them when ever I see them reasonably priced. I'm not paying a lot for them. You can buy a mold and make your own a lot more economically.
