chartplotter/depthfinder combo unit

Does anyone have an opinion on a good chartplotter/depthfinder unit that is in the 400-700 dollar range. There are so many choices I have no idea if I'm getting one that is good. I would prefer a garmin, since I have had great luck with their car units. The unit will get lots of exposure to the elements and we tend to be a little rough on equipment. Thanks in advance.

Garmin 478

One of my guides bought this unit & we all went ape shiat over it.

Big screen, able to add data cards (not that you need any) & did I mention the big screen!!!

We retired the 76's & just bought (2) two of them.

They come preloaded with everthing you need.

All you need to buy is the transducer.

I know you asked for more expensive units, but if you are looknig for a simple, B&W unit, the Eagle 350 GPS/FF is only $199.00. Not fancy & doesnt have all the bells and whistles but seems to be a good basic unit.

I highly recommend not buying a combination unit. If you loose one you loose both. On the Windy I have all electronics everthing is a separate unit with back ups on my Northstar 921 GPS and 800 Loran, I dont need bacup for the depth recorder or auto pioolet goese because if you know where you are you should know the depth of the water and if the auto piolet goese down I still remember how to steer. I would keep away from a combo unit

Hi Kirk,
I'll ditto what cap'n Jack and Carl say. If you lose one unit with a combo you loose them both and since you are probably not going to use it on the ocean go with the cheapie.

I have a Garmin GPS on my Grady White but I trust my back up Compass and charts more than the GPS for gross course work. Go to the chapter on dead reckoning in Chapman's
