Chicago sightseeing

Eric,

I don't know when you leave and how your itinery looks. I grew up in Chicago. You have gotten great advice so far. The Museum of Science and Industry is great and has lots of hands-on things for your kids. The U-505 is great and thinking about bringing it all the way to Chicago by water is cool. It should also be interesting to you and your wife. It is all by itself. Unless, you want to drive around Hyde Park and tour our presidents neighborhood!

The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium are part of the museum campus on the lakeshore. It is easy to spend a day there. If you go to the Field Museum make sure you see the lions of Tsavo, they were maneaters. There was a movie with Val Kilmer about them. The name escapes me now.

The Sears, or is it the Kmart Tower now, has just opened a balcony with a glass floor. The view from the Hancock Tower may be better. It is at the north end of Michaigan Ave closer to the lake. You would get a better view of the northshore of Chicago and Oak Street beach. Also, there is the old Water Tower that survived the fire. It sits in the middle of Michigan Avenue near the Hancock Tower. There is lots of shopping along Michigan Avenue.

The Lincoln Park Zoo is nice and there are a lot of historical statues in Lincoln Park. In fact, a relative on mine, last survivor of the Boston tea party is buried there.

A boat trip on the Chicago River and the lake is nice. The Chicago River has the greatest concentration of draw bridges in the world.

There is lots of great food in Chicago. For pizza go to Giordano's. There are lots of great hot dog places.

One place I haven't seen mentioned is the Art Institute. It truley is a world class art museum. At least drive/walk by and see the lions out in front. It is on Michicgan Ave across from Grant Park. Other art you can drive by is the Picasso sculpture in Daley plaza and the Chagal mosaic at what was the First National Bank of Chicago, Bank One building now??? Both are in the Loop.

There is more to do than one visit can handle. Going to a Cubs/Card game at Wrigley is hard to beat. Is it a day game? That's how baseball at Wrigley should be!

Have fun,

Tom

Mark,

Thanks. I remember seeing a sub in Chicago, but could not remember which one. Can not imagine spending months at sea in those old diesal boats...

Take care!

Sorry I missed seeing your post before we left. I would have liked to have met up with you.

Trip was a ton of fun and we did a whole bunch of the stuff you guys recommended like Navy Pier, sightseeing boat tour, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Museum of Sci. & Ind., Adler Planetarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower - whatchyoutalkinboutwillis). But by far the most fun we had, and the reason for going to Chicago, was the Cubs/Cards game yesterday. Wrigley Field certainly had a historic feel and the pubs and restaraunts there on Clark and Addison reminded us a lot of Mardi Gras. Lots of celebrating after the game. The only downside was the Cards lost the game we saw but they did win the second of the double header. Everyone, including 5 year old Caroline had a blast and are already looking forward to nexts years "follow the Cards trip" which will probably takes us to St. Louis and Bush Stadium. Plenty to do in St. Louie and no doubt Michelle will keep us on a pace needed to see as much as possible in less than a week.

Eric,

Glad you and your family enjoyed the trip. Nice to see the pictures of your family. Caroline sure has changed since I saw her last! Can't saw that the boys have changed much but their Dad has aged a bit. Good thing Michelle came along to keep you all inline. Be sure to let me know if you ever venture my direction. I may have to think about a return trip sometime in the future. I'm sure Thomas could give me a lesson or two on good duck calling.
