Chincoteague, VA

Taking the family to Chincoteague Island for vacation next week. (June 12 thru 19) Plan on hitting the Ward Museum in Salisbury, MD, spending some much needed "down time" around the pool and beach with the wife and kids, but want to take in all I can duck/decoy related. Open to any and all suggestions. I would also be interested in local favorites for places to eat.

I also wish to spend some time fishing. Don't care what I catch, just want to catch something we can prepare and eat while there. I have read the flounder fishing in the area can be great, but has been a little slow so far this year. I don't mind spending some money for a charter, but it will probably just be me and my son wanting to do some fishing, so I don't know what options there will be without chartering the whole boat just for two of us. If anyone has any suggestions regarding fishing opportunities, I would like to hear them as well.

Lastly, if there are any carvers within reasonable driving distance of Chincoteague, and if you don't mind a visitor in your shop for a short while, I would love to come by and shoot the breeze with you. Looking forward to getting away and possibly meeting up with some folks from the carving community.

Thanks to all that take time to offer suggestions.

Brad

Bills's seafood restaurant on Main Street is the best in town. Also the ice cream emporium a few doors down will satisfy the kids. Across the street is a decoy shop, worth going into also. Lots of local guides there to take you fishing.

If your into carving this guy is worth a bit of time, Roe Terry.

Turn left first road off of bridge and down the block a bit.

T. Hickman and CraigS - Thanks for the input. I will be sure to check both of them.

Got to be some other east coasters that can weigh in. I am truly interested in locals favorites. I am going to drive north a couple of hours one day and visit with the famous, or is it infamous George W. If that drive expands me to other "must sees", please let me know.

Thanks,

Brad

Be sure to stop by Woodys Barbecue and Island Creamery while your there. Both on Road to Assateague Island. Rock and Red drum have been being caught pertty regulary from the surf at Assateague Island if you want to combine a little fishing with your beach days. If you don,t target them a little bit of fish bites bloodworm & squid strip combo on a weighted spot/kingfish rig will usually catch about everything else that swims in the surf.

Roy,

Thanks a bunch! That's the stuff I'm after. Advice about local eateries and advice how to catch my own!!

Couple thoughts...

Captain Steve's on Maddox is the go-to place for all of your fishing questions and equipment. They can definitely help you out with fishing. There are quite a few "head type" pontoon boat charter boats where it's reasonable to go for a few hours. Some of them have sunset tours too.
As.mentioned above, Rowe "Duckman" Terry is a good visit. His place is on Main St., North of town.
There are several, long time carvers sprinkled around the island too. Some of them have little huts or shacks set up along the road.
Check out the Beach on nearby Assateague Island. You can get in with your Duck Stamp, or pay a few bucks for a weekly pass. (I always pay. I don't mind giving up a few bucks for that). There are also two nice visitor's centers on Assateague. One near the beach. Try to catch the Wildlife Loop. You can walk it anytime, (wouldn't necessarily recommend that though, the State Bird is the mosquito, and there are gozillions of them there), but you can drive it everyday after 3:00.
Lots of little touristy "shops" scattered along the main drags, Main St. And Maddox. for the "girls". We always spend some time in "The Brant".
I agree with the eating stops posted previously too, except would add our favorite sit-down eateries. The Village, on Maddox is our favorite. Best food and meals on the Island, we think. And can't miss Bill's Prime on Main St. They have really nice food too, but are open for breakfast. They have a pretty good brunch menu. AJ'S on the Creek is worth looking into too.

Look around a bit. There's a lot to see along the back roads.

Have fun! And don't be afraid to post your stories and pictures.
