Chuck Huff transom too thick??? HELP!

Not a hater Scott. Just confused that you seem to be upset that a motor turned out not to fit the transom on the boat. You make the statement that you don't think you should have to fix a brand new boat (as if you have been cheated somehow), and that left the door open for others to bash the manufacturer - who's a very distant third party in all this.

You went with a combo that left you with a problem that I'm glad you have a solution to.

Scott, I have a similar issue on my sneakbox, but I built the motor board.... and used my 1990 Johnson as the basis. Had to remove the aluminum clamp plate to fit the Yamaha. As much as the motor board/transom for a commercial boat should be standard, the clamp on the OB should be too! Why would anyone design something unique? As you and I both have a similar issue, I am inclined to think that the Yamaha clamp might be uniquely smaller? I set a Merc on my motor board and had plenty of clamping space... so I have these 3 data points only. I could grind the tabs off the backside of the Yamaha mount, that might gain me the better part of 1/8", but I hate to do that to a new motor.... without the aluminum clamp plate my motor fits, and I have the motor board wrapped in SS that I hate to try to get off at the risk of damaging the mahogany. I think I will finalize the height shims, then clamp it down and drill a through bolt and be done. Not taking the motor off very often anyway,

Dave- From what I understand the Yamaha' s do have very narrow clamps on them. I also considered grinding the barbs off the backside of the clamp but don't really want to hack at my motor. I think taking a little off the boat is the lesser of two evils.
 
Scott, what pitch prop does your motor have? These huff boats are fast in the water. If your under propped your going to hit the rev limiter real quick. Do you plan on hunting more than 1 person in the boat?
 
Jamie- I have the stock prop. 9 1/4 x 11 I think. I'm going to be hunting alone in it. Will I be ok with the stocker?
 
Scott, I ran a 9 1/4 + 9 on mine because of the weight I ran in the boat. With just myself in the boat planned off real quick and the rpm's stayed up. Run it first but if you feel the boat does not plain off real quick try the smaller pitch, you will lose a little top speed but the boat will jump on plain.
 
I finally got around to modifying my transom today. I ended up belt sanding it down and glassing over the bare wood. I then hit it with some paint. Motor fits now, I'm happy...Thanks all for the help.
 
I would have removed the clamps on the motor, placed the motor on the transom, thru-bolted the motor on the bottom mounting holes, then used a bolt the same thread as the existing clamps to run tight to the transom where the clamps would have been. Would have eliminated modifying the transom.
