Classic Duck Hunting Destinations

I've always had a hankering to start in the North and travel down the Mississippi River for about a month and hunt my way down to Louisiana.

Jay.

In 55 seasons I have been on few guided waterfowl hunts, and none were the lap of luxury.

In fact at one place, when we were given wash cloths and towels for our room, we were also given mouse traps.

All guided hunts were of necessity, as there was no other way to hunt. All were well worth it, and really opened my eyes.

The Long Point Company Club is historic, and plays a role in North American Waterfowling History. It has been on my waterfowling radar since I was young.

If you enjoy reading, Lore & Legends of Long Point by Harry B. Barrett is a very good book.

There are many fine clubs in the USA, but as far the birds are concerned, Canada is my favorite.

The birds are many at certain times, and they taste the best that I have ever eaten.

As to how I would feel gunning such a place?

I would feel just fine, and enjoy it as much, and as long as possible.

Having paid my dues experiencing the many hardships of waterfowling (all required). Bring It ON!

Plus the decoys would really set me off. The handmade decoys from Canada are some of my favorites.

As far as the dog and the decoys. Members use their own if they wish. They each own a share.

Exclusive? About as exclusive as it gets membership wise.

Yet there are strict rules regarding everything, including the number of days you can hunt.

The gentleman we spoke with was very straight forward about the hunt. He did not talk down to us, and was very interested as to how we did, and our rigs.

My chance of ever hunting there? ZERO.

If you wish check out the Turkey Point Club as well.

Best regards
Vince

Good morning, Tom~

I had not jumped into this thread because I could not help but think.... Black Ducks in saltmarshes anywhere around Long Island? Brant up west ? Of course Broadiebeaks from a Scooter on Great South Bay ? No travel needed for some classic hunts I have enjoyed too many times to count.

On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed gunning Eiders with Troy Fields on the coast of Maine a few Decembers back. The history and setting were truly satisfying and provided us with far more than just shooting a new species.

I think I'll crack open Duck Shooting Along the Atlantic Tidewater before bed tonight.....

All the best,

SJS

I second the votes for Eastern Shore of MD, and hunting the Chesapeake. Also the Potomac if you?re nearby.

The Long Point Company is referred to by the locals as ?Millionaires? and very private. However you can hire a local guide and can hunt the public marshes at Long Point.

I would add James Bay goose hunt to the list. Not sure if anyone is offering guided hunts there now but my first waterfowl hunt was at the camp the Ontario Northland Railway used to run near Moosonee/ Moose Factory. The Cree guides mouth called the birds. Travelled by freighter canoe to the tidal flats then hiked a half mile to grassy meadows to hunt. Guides propped up harvested birds to expand our decoy spread. Northern Lights were a bonus at night!

Forgot to post a favorite, although the flight is a bear--Argentina, ducks, perdiz, dove, hare, well, you get the idea![;)]

A few classic Western hunts-the Great Salt Lake by airboat for teal and pintails, hunting out of coffins on the lakeshore
Decoying Tundra swans in Utah
California Central Valley rice fields for specks and pintails
Late season mallards and divers on the Snake river in Idaho
Divers on the Colombia in Washington State
