I've tried the Valspar and the Rustoleum Clear Flat spray and the Valspar came out WAAAAY on top.

Hope it helps.

I think they changed their packaging but I just bought another can today at Lowes. Clear Flat by Valspar. Good stuff.

Same stuff from another site.

And in what ways is it better? I'm presently looking for a flat clear to put on a couple of items that need it. My concern is that this clear does not lift the paint underneath.

After reading about how new decoys benefit from a coat of the clear flat to slow regular wear and tear I purchased the rustoleum brand clear flat and it was "satin" at best...very shiny when compared to the Valspar.
Most recently I hit some old Herters decoys with a coat of Rustoleum Pro oil base in flat black from a qt can. Was VERY shiny.. Valspar flat rattle can to the rescue...amazing the cut in shine.

I've used the Valspar micro-mist matte spray on standard decoys and pickleweed heads., painted in acrylics and alkyd oils, with no issues. From what I remember, Steve Lewis told me the mirco-mist spray was what was discontinued. I've had one can clog...assumed I hadn't cleared the spray orifice adequately.

Best Flat-Clear that we've found is Testor's Dull Cote #1260. It's a lacquer and I recommend mist-coats and flash off the solvent with a hair dryer. Works well. Only available in 3 oz. cans.

There is also a company called Army Painter. They sell a a product very similar to Dullcote. In my opinion it is better and it comes in a full size spray can.
The product is used to spray military/ war game miniatures and models.
