Cold Snap, how low did you go?

4 in NJ this morning. A little brisk on the morning walk!
Colder than Maine. I woke up to 9 degrees. What's exceptional is not the cold--I remember -15 and -20 on multiple occasions when I was growing up, and that was down on the coast so warmer in winter than where I now live inland. But it's stayed cold for a long time. Since December 1, we've only had 15 days at the house where the high temperature got above freezing, and most of those were under 35. Thickest ice we've seen in decades at my local perch and crappie slumming spot.

Goose hunting shut down as of now, snow formed a thick crust on top preventing birds from sitting and melting the snow and the water, well let’s just say not much of that left open either. If and when we get a thaw… oh boy it’s going to get western I can almost guarantee it!

Today’s the last day of duck season in NJ. I wasn’t planning to hunt, as the cold has started to get to me, and I shot a couple of ducks earlier this week. I was happy to end the season on that hunt. BUT, a buddy of mine shot his six ducks plus a honker earlier today, and that got me too pumped up to skip out on my last chance to shoot a duck. I got out of work at 3:30pm and rushed to my nearest hunting spot. I was barely set up for 2 minutes when I got a crack at a goose. It’s all I shot, and goose is still legal for two more weeks, but I’m still glad I got out. After wood ducks, honkers are probably my favorite waterfowl to eat.

Heavy frost predicted for the next two mornings here in South Tampa, not a big deal for most of yall but I’ve got 4 banana plants within a few months of putting out flowers and two mangos that are already in full bloom. I can cover 3 of the bananas but the one other and two mangos are too tall.
Yall be safe up north. Watch for black ice. I guess the next thread needs to be ice fishing pics??

34 this morning in Tampa. That’s freaking cold for down here. No snow or ice from this weekends storm though so I’m not complaining.
Forecast is for another blast of cold air this coming weekend, with temperatures down into the teens on the northern Gulf coast.
How are yall faring up north?
Anyone still hunting or is everyone ice fishing??
A few of the local guides use a ice eater and a honda generater for their shore blinds. I have a spot on a channel that stays open, but hard to launch.

Low of 32 in South Tampa, saw that it was -1 where I grew up in NE PA. I bet the lakes are making ice and booming this morning.

I can only imagine how cold it is up your way Vince!

We haven't been above freezing for a week and it doesn't look like we're gonna get above freezing for another week! Certainly is the time to ice skate if it wasn't for the foot of crusty snow over all the lakes

Hey Jode,

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Been in the single digits and teens here in the daytime, and colder at night for weeks. The wind that always blows makes it even more interesting. Snow is piled high everywhere and how much of it is on the ground varies from mile to mile sometime even closer. Almost all trout streams frozen over and ice fishing has been in full swing for awhile.

The daylight has been wonderful for painting due to the refraction from the Snow. I have been painting everyday. Have several oil paintings going and while I await the oil paint to cure I do watercolors each day to keep productive I'm painting Fish, and have declared 2026 The Year of the Fish for my art and carving. Been many years since I have done that. I do have a Common Gallinule ready to carve but the cellar shop is much to cold for that at present.

It will be in the 20's soon for a few days. Folks up here will be wearing shorts (no joke, these folks are hardy souls). I've been going through my fly fishing gear, ordering fly lines and a few other items I need. In my mind I'm already Out There. Might do some Squirrel hunting to see how the deer and turkey are doing in the deep snow. Have not seen any waterfowl for weeks. Bird & Squirrel feeder has constant action and my goodness the Grey, Black and Fox Squirrels are plump. Spring is a comin' but not soon.

Best regards
Vince
