concealing my white boat

Hey guys,

I'm trying to find an easy way to conceal my white fishing boat. I've got to make longer runs to get away from other duck hunters and I don't think I want to paddle my kayak 10 or so miles. I want to hide it not necessarily build a blind for it. That might be asking too much. So far my best idea is to get a military surplus parachute, but I've been having trouble locating one. I have found a couple places on the internet that have them but I haven't bit the bullet yet and ordered one. I tried the military mesh camo and that didn't cut it. You could see the boat right through it. If any of you guys have any suggestions I'd like to hear it.

We use parachutes which you can buy @ The Sportsmen Guide or Cheaper Than Dirt.

The camo ones are hard to come by now but paint adheres & stays on the fabbric just fine.

Throw a little brush on top & the boat will disappear!!!

There's alot of guys down this way that can make a (20) twenty foot flats boat disappear with a parachute.

I've got a (26) twenty-six foot camo chute that I cover the airboat with when hunting with older clients in the boat.

BTW, to keep it from rooting, store in a mesh dive type bag so the air gets to it to dry.

Your boat is perfectly camoed once it snows!

Seriously, how big a boat? I found a surplus camo net that covers up to a 16 foot boat--2 of them would do any boat I've ever hunted out of.

When hunting the coast, we find birds are not all that boat-shy so long as the boat is 100+ yards from the blind and not moving. I see a lot of black ducks rafted up next to moored boats . . . . .

We cover the boat anyway because it can't do any harm, but it's probably overkill.
 
I see you ordered a parachute, but if that doesn't work out there is liquid that you can apply that dries as a durable film on the boat. I'm not an expert, but basically the material is a mix of binders and pigment, you apply it wet and wait several hours to a few days and it dries to a durable coating. Something to look into...
 
I've heard of the coating you speak of. My boat it still too new and in to good of shape to apply said liquid pigments. In another 10 years or so I'll proabably go that route.

Exactly!! Just buy a sneakbox man, they aren't that expensive. One thing that big white boat is good for is sea duck hunting. I did a Striper/Sea duck hunt not long ago and it was so funny to drop the striper rod and pick up the gun, drop two Scoters, then go pick up a bite on the line. Lol!

You guys are right I do need another boat but I'm not ready to do that yet. Maybe in a couple more years. I also need a boat that I can travel a good distance sometimes over fairly rough conditions. The bay boat is great for that, but not sure a small boat would be much help there.
 
Sounds like you need a Bankes or a TDB or maybe on of the garvey's that Dave Clark builds.......
 
In a perfect world I'd have 5 or 6 boats. I'm trying to make do with the two I have. When I get it figured out I'll post my results.
 
Anchor that boat offshore a little or upwind a couple hundred yards and it won't matter what color it is.

Another option would be 6 mil, translucent Visqueen (constructin plastic). It sorta "wicks" the color of the water right over the boat and makes you look like the water.

I've seen your web page and I've thought about doing that for my kayak. I've got it set up for layout hunting. How does the visqueen work on a sunny day? I could see it working well as long as its cloudy.

Sun/no Sun, doesn't seem to matter. If the visqueen is shining in the Sun, so is the water. ;)

I tried some of that stuff on my house and it seemed to work ok there too
