Went out today with the low tide occurring at 0905 and I made the commitment to ground the boat and hunt thru the swing! I pulled the estuary up to the meadow and put out 7 black ducks and 11 buffleheads. Got settled and it didnt take long for customers. The first visitor was real nice black duck and I cut him down! Got spoofed by the second one where i didnt see him until i heard his wings....bang, bang, bang....expletive. I took a couple juvie drake buffleheads and a hen common merganser with clean single shots. I then whiffed on a drake bluebill...expletive.
Waited them out for awhile and then i had a flock of close to fifty buffleheads decoyed perfectly and i managed a pair of hens (go figure) out of that group with single shots. The most exciting thing was having a brant almost fly into the cockpit with the chief and I....i mean i had to wave him off...when he finally flared....i could smell him,,,,i sincerely mean that!
The chief hit all the retrieves today and didnt have any meltdowns...he may be a dog yet!
We then pulled stakes and went on a mapping and scouting run. We covered about 6 miles of meadow which is a lot in a boat that does 12 mph downhill...lol. Got some entries to some back creeks plotted and found out just how fast that bottom can come up...my poor prop is never going to be the same! Im paying my dues,,,i will get a handle on this coastal thing!
The picture of the estuary with AC skyline in the background was a happy accident!
