Cool Find

What a great day. I went over to a friends house on one of the outer beaches on the South Shore of Long Island to buy a Remington 870 410 for $300. What a super neat gun that I can not wait to try (tomorrow!)
There was a crate next to his shop that had some rough old decoy in it. Turns out they are full balsas from the 20's that were under a house when he was hired to lift it. The cedar (?) heads are really neat, especially the leaning black duck that's pictured. As I'm typing this, I see that the pics are going up as blue question mark boxes, any idea why?

Foiled! I got them, viewed and downloaded them - but cannot open or edit with any of my usual softwares. This looks like "Photo" softwar ???

Here goes a test:

Nope! Just a little blue square.

Coronavirus - of a truly novel kind?????

I opened this thread thinking you might have found a supply of TP or hand sanitize. Pictures are showing on my end.

Paul, there are five images posted, all vertical. What you have is a good cleanup project. That one by itself is/was likely a mallard drake3, evidenced by the black upper covert area and the darkish back.
Have fun. Looks like you can muck about with the spare heads. Now to find out who lived there and put them under the house. HAVE FUN!

Thanks George, I see them now. I converted them to jPegs and reposted.

Right now they are just IMG XXXX files. Metadata says "Item type: HEIC file"

'tis Greek to moi....

Apple iphones now store pictures in this bastard HEIC format. A lot of programs cannot edit or open them. Why they moved away from the industry standard jpg baffles me. I am able to open them in MS Paint and save them as jpgs. You might try that.

Well, since this thread turned into a tech-update I mine as well run it right off the rails too. Yes Eric, it is very easy to "airdrop" from the phone to the desk top but then you have to go to FILE, then EXPORT, then dropdown menu to jPeg to desktop and from there you can attach them to posts. But you guys must have done something because not long back, it was almost impossible to load pics on the first try without resizing them which is a real hassle.

Paul- that?s a very interesting find, are there any identifying marks/ brands? I hope you choose one for a restoration.

Paul

What platforms are you using? Were you going from iPhone to PC, mac, or some other combination.

The forum s/w resizes pictures automatically when uploaded and has done so since we upgraded it over a year ago. If you are using airdrop from your phone to a PC I'll have to look into that because I've never tried that. I use File explorer and a lighting cable to transfer from my phone to my PC, and iTunes to transfer from my PC to my iPhone. Both are clunky so if there is a Bluetooth airdrop way to go from IOS to Windows and back I'll have to look into that.

Hi Tom,
They were found under a beach house on Captree Island that is still "in the family." While there are no marks, they are pretty surely the grandfather of the current homeowner who was known to be an avid gunner. My friend who was working on the house found them and they are his now. He is also a skilled Bayman who will surely do something with them. I'm going to see if I can get one of those black duck heads....

I'm all Apple, so I can tell you how to do it from your phone, but if you are going to a PC it may not offer you the option. If you select a pic on your phone then in the bottom left corner of your phone there is a blue box with an arrow (which means, SEND) once you hit that blue box a blue spiral will appear under the pic that says "airdrop" and in my case, it quickly turns into a Gray Ball with a PM for my initials and it says "MacBook Air" indicating my device. If I tap it, it will go right from my phone to that device.

Paul

Thank you. I'll have verify but I think I can do something similar to my PC if I turn on bluetooth and pair my PC to my phone. Lets say that works. What do you mean by " but then you have to go to FILE, then EXPORT, then dropdown menu to jPeg to desktop"? I have some heic pics on my PC but I don't know how to do your above quote on a PC. Sounds like that is a Mac operation. The simplest way I've found to convert HEIC to jpg is to open them in paint and save as jpg. If there is a better way I'm all ears.

By the way, for all those following along. The forum s/w handles HEIC straight from your iPhone. I'm trying to understand a better way to go from iPhone to PC and then to the forum.

Thanks Paul.

Ok, so, you are right that if I airdrop a pic from my phone to my Mac, it will appear as an HEIC (or whatever they call it.) If I click on it and view it, then go to FILE in the top left of my Mac, then scroll down to EXPORT and click on that, it will offer me options of which format I'd like to Export it as, I chose jPeg. If were better at this I'd be able to explain which format is best for what, but I'd imagine that a spreadsheet would be better suited for one and a song would be better suited as another.

I too was a PC guy for years because I just got it in my head that Mac's are more for artists etc. Once I switched, it's super easy. My phone, desk top, laptop, iPad and even TV now all interact. And full disclosure, I'm probably a 4 out 10 as far as aptitude on all of this.

Paul

Appreciate all the info. I wish I had a Mac and not a PC. I'm scared to switch because that means I'd have to try and show my wife how to use a Mac and she's finally getting the hang of a PC. She is an OR RN and never touches a computer so when she went back to school for her MS FNP learning how to use a PC was tougher for her than classes. Imagine never using a PC and then having to all at once. Thank god those days are behind us.

[size 4] Pictures remind me of the condition of some old Bluebill decoys that I did an antique restoration on for the late Jim Bosanny Sr. ( Wiz-Boz) quite a few years back. Someone had picked them up at a Wisconsin flea market or antique store and given them to him.
He decided that he wanted to keep them as old looking as possible, and requested that any restoration/ repaint reflect that.

Here they are prior to "restoration":

....and here was my finished product:

I found paint schemes for them by going to internet photos of decoys that had a similar profile and may have been from the time period these were made & used.
It was a fun project for a great guy!
