I've been getting phone calls from Jon Espey all weekend (borderline harassment) saying I need to get off my butt and start working on some coots. Well between last night and this afternoon I managed to get some heads cut out on the bandsaw and rough out about 7 bodies. The 5 or 6 coots with assembled heads were done about a week ago but that just gives me a head start...

I know I have two boys under two and most of the time can't do anything when anyone asks, but I'm starting to feel out of the loop with coot dust flying everywhere and Shawn teaching some "How to make a duck call class". How about a phone call sometime?

Don't worry, my wife won't let me come out and play anyway!!!!

how do you guys cook op coot?or do you ever, ive never tried it. if they tasted worth a dang i'd fill the boat up with them .

The plan is to let my six year old "sit" with your two while our wives shop and we make chips!!! Think the D.H.R. will go for that? LOL Shawn
 
Coots get a bad rap. I think the people who say that coots taste bad, have never actually eaten one. Cook them like any other duck. Where we are, coots are eating grass just like our Gads,Widgeon,etc. Fillet the breast, Butterfly them open,soak in water overnight. Marinade 30 minutes, wrap in bacon and grill them. Don't listen to the nay sayers.

well, unless I show up with some smoked chicken and sausage jambalaya and birthday cake.

I'm still laughing at Mike's story.....I understand you got quite a kick out it too.....
