Had a fun time in Mexico this year, although the volume was not as hot as the last time that I went. Still had plenty of shooting on a couple of days and it was nice to be catered to for a little while. Went with a couple of buddies who really know how to have a good time. This is a cool mixture of drakes my partner and I got one morning. Unfortunately I did not get a cinnamon teal- it is the only North American puddler that has always eluded me. The guides truck made an interesting backdrop. Looks similar to mine only it is blue instead of tan!

Had a good redhead shoot the first afternoon. Amazing how they can be dumb as rocks one day and then not even tip a wing to you on days that seem like they ought to be better than the one that you had a good shoot on. What a beautiful bird, definitely one of my favorites. FYI, this organization had a limit of 15 ducks/ hunt. Much different than the last time I went when the limit was "shoot until you get tired of feeding mexicans." Yes, that is actually what the outfitter told me the first morning on the way to the blind.

It is fun to go to Mexico for alot more reasons than the hunting. 3rd world country for sure.

Nice going Ira! Mexico can be hard to beat for some great shooting. The Teal grand-slam is alomost a sure thin and all the birds are as prime as they are going to get by then. I think those Redheads are as good looking as any in Las Vega!

Glad you guys had a good trip. Where on the gulf were you hunting. Did you do any quail or paloma shooting?

Dave

that's a lotta birds... i barely saw that many birds while hunting this season... I still don't know if I can run down a banded goose on the edge of a parking lot... i tried but couldn't get it... ;) Let's get together soon to carve??? Glad to hear your trip went well!

nice goin' you rat bastuhd... hehe

those buddies wouldn't happen to be the ones supposin' to send me my fatboy hardware since... well, it's been duck season, so I view that as a legitimate alibi!!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Any chance you could send me some info on your trip? I have never been there, but have long planned on going. How much did it cost? Also , how many can you bring back through customs?
Please e-mail the info when you can.

Yes, Dave- I was humbled by palomas on 2 seperate occasions. They dont fly the same way down there that they do up here, I can promise you. There is rocket fuel in their tailfeathers down there- especially with the 40 mph tailwind we had one afternoon!

Christian, maybe we can get out after the snows together. They are not back yet, but will be coming soon. Keep in touch.

John, Mexico is not a cheap trip. I think you can do Argentina for the same cost. I went with Las Palomas de Loma Colorada this trip and Reuben del Castillo last trip. These guys were very organized and facilities were 1st class. I think Reuben did a better job of scouting and had better spots in general- of course, there are lots of other factors that may be involved, but that is my observation. You can bring back a bunch of birds that are cleaned- bringing them back whole for mounting is much more difficult though. I only brought home doves and brought back 100.

Nice work Ira. Did you have a chance to eat any of the redheads(ducks). I've been told that depending on diet they can taste strong down there. I've always liked redhead quite a bit. I've heard the Mexican's do a real nice job with duck.

Paul, e-mail me..... I did not realize that you were still in need of something. Hope that you had a good season!

Jay, I did not bring back any of the ducks from Mexico. They do clean them so that they look store bought. Doves too. Every bird is plucked and whole with an intact wing. The dove look like bats in the frozen packages when you get home!

I can tell you that the redheads that I have shot in canada and eaten are excellent. The ones that we shoot here are not as good, but still passable table fare when grilled after marination of the bird and yourself!

Ira,
I was able to make a trip to Mexico in November this year. (I went last year also.) Our guide hunts ponds adjacent to Laguna Madre on the east coast. On our last day we got into the divers. Previous days we shot mixed bags of Pintails, Badpate, Teal and Mottled ducks. The last day was a rainy, windy, cold day. (Cold by Mexico standards!) It was a day I'll never forget. Gotta love those redheads!
After numerous attempts I give up trying to get pictures within the post, so see the attachment.

Great pictures I've never seen so many Redheads. Also most species except Mallard and Widgeon are long gone from Montana by the time they get their full colors, so seeing those teal and sprig in bright colors is special. Do you know what the rules and possible pitfalls of bringing your own retriever are? It's gotten to the point where if my dog can't go, I don't wan't to go either. But that looks like great duck hunting.

I would guess that bringing your own dog would not be very feasible... I dont know that for sure, however as we did not try.
