Hello Gents,

I finally got a sneakboat, I was wondering if you could tell me what type of paint you all are using on your duckboats? David, Tod, Brian, anyone?

Second question, my boat has no decoy racks... I'm looking for tips and ideas on how to install them, Do they attach, detach ? Mounting brackets out of wood? I have some nice cedar 1 x 6 x 1/2" boards to use to make them.

Any help, pictures, would really be greatly appreciated. Thank you Ed

I havent used it to paint a boat but I have painted a bunch of decoys with FME from Lou.
Great stuff.

Ed, I used ppg epoxy primer first on the boat, than I used ppg deltron,in the color of Mink brown,I dont know why they call it that because it looks alot like od. I sprayed the paint on but rolled the primer on the hull,I sprayed the remainder of the boat, top deck and the inside etc. with epoxy primer. If you get the deltron from a auto parts house, make sure you instruct them add alot of flattner to it,otherwise it will shine.I like both products very well, they are very tough!!! Be sure and wear a repirator, even with rolling, the fumes will make you abit squirrley!!! LOL As for the grass rails,I used 5/4 mahogany on them and followed Erics plan,by the way Eric great plan!!!! The attaching to the boat is a great debate, whether or not to epoxy it down permanent or to just bolt it down. That will be your decision to make. I chose to do both,I used brass threaded inserts, epoxyied them in and used silcone bronze 1/4 inch bolts,I also added some thickend epoxy on the feet of the grass rail, Im not worried about breaking the rail,I figure if I break it,Ill cut it off redrill resand and repaint. I have heard alot of good things about Lou Tisches FME paint,I am going to try some on my Piroque this winter.Hope this helps,Good luck with your project Brian Rippelmeyer

Ed, I read your post again, and you were talking about decoy racks not grass rails,I was talking about grass rails, see I told you about that ppg paint!!! LOL Sorry Brian Rippelmeyer

Ed,

I've used FME in the past to paint the broadbill I built. It's tough as nails and I don't think you could go wrong selecting FME. As far as the decoy racks go, I don't have any on my current Estuary but I've seen first hand one that does. I would do a search for "Estuary" and take a look at how Dave attaches his racks to the boat. I'm not sure what the clamp is that he uses but it looks stout and is removable.

Sneakboxes huh?

The first thing that comes to my mind is call Hank. I know you two dont get along real good :) but
he could help you out I think.

We need to get together for that travel decoy too. Any thoughts?

Ed,
I just made decoy rails for my BBSB. I used a L bolt as you see in the picture to slide in the oar lock. Put the rail on with the slide that goes into the back handle then tighten the bolt until the rail is snug. You should never need to tighten or loosen it again, just lift up on the back of the rail where the slide goes into the handle on the back and the entire rail will come off. Hope this helps.

Ed, I just painted a fiberglass boat with FME and followed Lous instructions. The boat looks great and so far I used the boat 6 times and the paint held up both inside and on the hull. It adhered to the glass fine.....John

Thank you guys for getting back to me. I now have some good ideas. I found out the boat is painted in Parkers. I'll post up some pictures of the boat and the progress when it happens.

Bill thanks for the offer. Carl told me about the Bill Perry Boat he picked up. I know he is happy. I just read his post about his opening day, sounds like it all went well and he had a great time. My first day will be Saturday. Your group sure made some great looking decoys..
