I can find nothing about hunting Coyotes in New York State (4 legged type). Can anyone recommend a guide, area, etc.? If not New York a neighboring state?
I'd really like to try it with my sons and extend the hunting season until the fish arrive.
Thanks alot!

I don't know of any guides in the finger lakes that guides for coyotes. I will ask around and if i am able to get more information for you i will let you know. In my experience they are very wary much more so than their western cousins. You see guys hunting them on tv and they make it look easy its much harder. They are two ways to do it that I know of, using calls or using dogs. I have never used dogs. In western central NY there is plenty of public land to hunt. Check Out the dec website public land or call a specific region and they will send you a book will roughly drawn maps. Something that I do with my son is crow hunting. It's a good way to get out of the house and pass the time. This also is not as easy as it sounds.

Hey Capt. Bill,

You're welcome to come on over to PA chase some coyotes. I'm planning to head out this weekend and try some new calls out. I'll be chasing coyotes for the next couple months or so.

How are your calls holding up for ya anyway? Did they get used and abused this season?

Steve

Steve do you get many up your way?
I still have yet to see one while hunting. I always hope I will call one in while fox hunting.

Side story on Coyotes in PA: I can still remember clear as yesterday:
Opening day of deer season on a Game Lands in southern Susqhehanna County PA back in 1985, a huge coyote came trotting past my deer stand. Didnt shoot him, it was that first one I had ever seen. It was huge. My buddy caught one trapping that year as well, could not believe how big it was. Destroyed the 1.5 coil spring it was in, bent it all to hell, but still held him until my buddy ran his line that morning.

Sam...If you take a look at the various organized coyote hunts that occur from late January into late February, Erie County consistently ranks as the best place to hunt coyotes in the state. There are more harvested in Erie County than any other county each year. Last year was an exception with the Mosquito Creek hunt, Erie county topped out at the number two county for the first time, but it also had more dogs harvested than previous years. We do have a good population of coyotes, but we also don't any shortage of hunters. That makes for a very challenging hunt. Give me a holler if you want to come up and give it a go.

Steve

I know they are up there. I have participated in the Mosquito Creek hunt. It just seems like most are shot by houndsmen.
I guess I meant, do you shoot many?
I may take you up on that some day.

There is always an add on craigs list for hunting coyotes in either ulster, orange county.
As for a guide you really don't need one.
You need a place upstate and a mouth call.
They come in the tricky part is seeing them before they see, heard, or smell you.
