cross bow

Anyone have a cross bow for sale? Discovered, after 2 shoulder surgeries I can't pull a bow to full draw even after cutting the poundage down to 40 (which is hardly enough for deer). Had a standing, broad side shot at 20 yds twice in 2 hours and couldn't pull the trigger--pretty disappointing to say the least.

Thanks Pete, I'll check that out. I knew I would have trouble shooting having worked with it at home but thought I would have at least one shot--but not there. There is no rotator cuff at all and with the biceps tendon cut even physical therapy home and at the clinic isn't going to do it for. Thank god I can play golf and the beretta allows me to shoot ducks.

boz,

Might want to double check your state, here in VT we have to have a special permit for it. I think it requires a dr. to fill out a form, but that sounds like no problem in your situation.

Boy oh boy, that doesn't sound like fun at all.

If your 12 ga. gets to be too much you might want to try a 28. I had a problem with a partially detached retina last summer so am shooting my 28 gauges much more. Found two loads that have been working very well for ducks - bismuth and Hevi-shot. The upside is that the recoil is almost nonexistent. So far there hasn't been a down side - haven't lost a duck I hit though it's still early and I've only shot 7 ducks with it.

I saw in past posts that you were using a 28 and I did look at one--it was a sxs I think Russian made.

If you are considering buying a new crossbow you might want to look at the Stryker. I think that it is made by Bowtech. A buddy of mine just got one and it seems to be a pretty nice bow and is a good bit faster than any other one on the market right now. You use a hand crank to cock it so there is no strain on a bad shoulder. You also use the crank to decock it instead of having to shoot it like other crossbows.

I bit the bullet and traded my 870 in on a 28. It's a 210 with a single trigger, Russian made sold thru Remington. What loads have been affective in steel for you--if you would share that? I also found (internet) a device called drawl-loc that can be put on my present bow that locks the arrow in full draw with a safety and trigger mechanism. It's considered a cross bow and although Gander Mt tells me it's illegal in this state, it actually is legal.
It continues to amaze me the information this forum provides and I thank you for your input.

Thanks for your input. I think I'm going to try a draw-loc which can be adapted to my present bow giving me for all intent and purpose a cross bow.

In the past here in Wisconsin I have done evaulations for crossbow permits for a few patients but the new law states anyone over 65 can, without a medical permit, buy and use a crossbow. I have yet to see one in the woods being used but they are selling them some for a pretty good piece of change.

Actually Jim, I'm reloading both bismuth and Hevi-shot. Bismuth shot is temporarily (I'm told from an "In the know" source) shut down due to the owners death so I have switched to loading Hevi-shot. As far as I have been able to find, there is no commercially available steel for the 28. If you can find some leftover loaded Bismuth shells in #6 or even #4 you should be good to go - they're not cheap though. My reloaded #6 Bismuth really smacked a pair of blue bills the first time I tried it.

I'd be glad to share the recipe if you are going to reload.

If you can't draw your bow, how are you going to get it back enough to put on a draw lock?

What reloader are you using? Does Mec have the units for 28? I can check that out. The draw-loc unit is cocked with standing on the bow with your feet and cocking with both hands pulling.

Jim,

When I bought my first 28 a couple of years ago I also picked up a MEC 650. It's one of their progressive machines without a resizing station. I already had a MEC supersizer so just had to get the 28 ga. resizing collet for it. MEC has a 28 ga unit in all their different models from the 600 JR up to the 9000. With the 650 the best I have done is 13 boxes in one hour with target loads. When I load Hevi-shot it is basically a hand load process and the best I have done is one box in 43 minutes.

With the price of 28 ga target loads at close to $10/box (at Gander Mt.) I figure I have had my reloader payed for sometime last summer. My cost without hulls is $3.06/box (based on $26/bag of shot). Of course you can't buy shot for that anymore - luckly I have enough for a couple of years.

Jim,if you have not been reloading shotgun ammo till now,and you only want enough ammo to hunt with the 28ga.I would buy rather than load.Besides the cost of lead being somewhere around $43 a bag,the 28ga hull is the most expensive hull you can find, with the .410 right there as well. The 12ga in 7/8-1oz loads is the cheapest ammo you can load today. All components are up,primers, wads, powder and shot.Think about how many boxes of shells you will shoot in a year.Unless ou intend to get involved with competition Skeet,or sporting clays with the 28,it wont pay you to reload.I shot Skeet for over 30 years in all guages, but I never practice with the 28,mainly because the hulls were so expensive.I would buy a case of new WW AA shells and reload them for a few years, then buy another case when they wore out.If you want to reload, look for a used single stage press by MEC,like the Sizemaster or versamec. Both have a primer feed (handy) and you only need a scale and EZ-pac to load all you want.An adjustable charge bar would be a handy addition to change from 3/4 oz lead target/upland,to 3/4oz bizmuth,or a 1oz bar wil probable work for the bizmuth load.Check with www.ballisticproducts.com or
<www.precisionreloading.com>,for loaders (new) and components.I paid $129 each for two 7lb bottles of Bizmuth plus $11 shipping, three months ago.
Ely,the British Ammo firm that loaded all the bizmuth for that company will be available under the Ely name shortly,if you cant find any Bizmuth loads at the palces I indicated,
also Mack's may have some left.
