Crow Decoy

Andy~

I do not have a gunner pattern, but I did carve a decorative (folk art style) - that is now with my daughter and her husband in Germany.

I think this crow is 16" LOA. If I were making gunning crows, I would probably go 20".

To get plenty of different poses, I would explore Google Images for "American Crow". Most of the images there are not copyrighted so I would just take what looks best. (NOTE: Google Images is a fabulous resource for carvers, etc, but be aware that misIDs are very common. There will be ravens, etc mixed in.

If you are uncomfortable with your drawing, you can just cut out the silhouette then go to Kinko's or the like and enlarge it on a big copier.

Will you be making silhouettes or full bodies? For gunners, I could imagine sawing the profile out of 1/4" plywood then gluing 1 1/2" foam to either side. The shaping would take just a few minutes with a coarse rasp and some 60 grit paper. Two coats of Flat Black Rustoleum and you're done!

To be hung in trees or on the ground?

Hope this helps,

Hey, thanks guys. I would like a full body, gunner style but I doubt it would ever leave the mantel. The gentleman who asked for it has a collection of different decoys and they are just for show. Steve, you said something about me drawing one but I don't think a stck crow would do. Bomber, I sent you my info . Thanks, Andy

I have several styles of full-sized patterns for crows that I have used for hunting. Send me a pm with your address and i'll be glad to send them to you.
