Crud in fuel filter

Fuel filter on my Merc had a layer of a brown crystal like stuff in it. What is this? Fuel breakdown products? Fuel line fragments?
BTW, I use Stabil and put a bottle of IsoHeat in it right before the season.

Got on a boat repair forum and consensus is that it's the inside of the fuel lines, supposedly silver Merc fuel lines are notorious for this issue Gonna buy new fuels lines and bulb.

I've had better luck buying auto fuel line from the auto parts store and making my own runs from the tank to the motor. Look for fuel line made in USA. It seems to stay supple much longer. I gave up on premade marine fuel lines a long time ago. After a season or two they feel like steel cables.

I needed a quick fix so I just bought an Attwood "ethanol compatible" premade assembly. But I will keep this in mind!

When I pulled the fuel pickup out of the tank to attach the new adapter, the pickup filter was spotless. Had to be the lines. THink I had a bad bulb too, wouldn't stay firm.

After I discovered what E 10 gas does to fuel lines I too went the automotive fuel line route. I haven't had a problem since. I try to run ethanol free in all my engines and add Startron or other additives if my motor has to sit any length of time.

Here's what the inside of my old fuel line looked like. Ethanol fuel delaminated the inside.

Ethanol as a fuel sucks, no debate.
Complete debacle.
Only ones to benefit are corporate farms and marine mechanics.

Yeah, Ethanol is just plain horrible. The local Stewarts shop sells Ethanol free. What a difference it makes. We started running all our small equipment at work with ethanol free gas. It has made a huge difference in regards to a decrease in carburetor related problems.

As far as the fuel lines, I would second the recommendation on automotive fuel lines.
