CT guys, Regs Meeting July 31

As usual, I plan on being there. Driving through Hartford in rush hour traffic does leave a bit to be desired. Maybe I'll go down early and go crabbing first.

Chris, The DEP website lists the time as from 6pm-8pm. But normally, I think CWA is cooking hot dogs at 6 and the first hour is waterfowler's social hour. Maybe email Min to see what time HE plans to start the meeting.

Good to see some of the usual faces. Scott, BobB, Rich Chmiel, and a bunch of others who don't visit here. Mr Finch didn't make it, nor did Pete Revicki or Bill Embacher. Didn't get to talk to Scott or Bob as much as I would normally do. Went to the Monkey Farm with Min (the biologist), Rich, and a bunch of others for some cold brewski's afterwards.

Whats the point of going? Min puts things to a vote, then does whatever he pleases anyway.

I like to visit with you guys, but too busy a day to add one more thing.

Pretty much true, but it's good to see "the guys". Min is looking for input on several things, like elimination of the Labor Day weekend goose hunting closure, ditching the 5 day South Zone early season and using those days in the late season....

I am with Bill, he dose what he wants with no regard to what we would like. We tried to get days added on in the late season and he said that we are already hunting to late in Jan.. All he will do is open it earlier in Nov. when there are no birds down the coast. At least you might be able to find find some teal early. It's not worth the aggravation. I do miss seeing you guys. Maybe a carving day at my house like you did last year. Who would be up for it and what works for you guys.
Pete

I was thinking the same Pete since we nixed CWA decoy day this year, my schedule sucks though so I won't even bother trying to pick a day that would work for me, I'll just hope the stars align for whatever day works for everyone else.

It was very good to see Jim, Scott, Rich and all the others who made it after missing last year.
Getting to talk to guys I don't see in my travels during the year is always worth it.
I will dissent from the crowd and say I feel lucky to have a biologist that hunts! The next generation of college wildlife graduates is not likely to be as deep in the hunting tradition.
I also feel lucky to have been hunting in a twenty year period with a 60 day liberal package.
The biggest points I heard were only 3400 or 3500 hip permits in CT. Politically this is a very low number and without an active voice to our legislators we are vulnerable to legal change.
Very low numbers on eastern mallard breeding pairs down from just a few years ago
Other species w low counts inc brant at lowest ever counted.
Also expect to see very high mortality from late and severe winter.

Ct waterfowlers is working w Deep on mentoring program to try to help the HIP issue. Scott and I agreed about being selfish and wanting to protect our spots. But I still took three boys last year. And my oldest daughter just finished VT camp for hunter safety. She may not sleep out to get a spot but the boys might.....
I love the late season hunt. But I agree w the management decision to let those days go at the very end due to my belief that we are not seeing good improvement on the breeding pair numbers and birds allowed to pass at that time may help.
I hope you all see more ducks than last year.
I am concerned this may be a tough year ahead. I am grateful to Minn and Kelly for working to keep us hunting and ESP the fact that they both love to hunt.
Jim I wish I could have made the trip to the after session but I had to get home to prep for sat morning match at the Fin in Chaplin
To those that did not make it I hope to see you all this year
Bob
