CT. opening day

How did the other Ct. guys do on Wednesday? We had a good morning hunt and a better afternoon hunt. We hunted in a little swamp off the main swamp because of how high the water is and had a great woodduck shoot with some mallards. In the afternoon we hunted out in the main swamp and again got into the woodducks along with some greenwings. All and all it was a great opening day.
Thanks Pete

Lame....one apiece for me and my brother inlaw....our shooting stunk up the whole area....almost nobody out where we were when there is usually 8-10 groups

Hey Pete...glad you did well. We haven't had any real bang ups yet but chipping away daily. This morning was one of the better mornings we've had but only because we shot well, there wasn't really any more birds than other days. I've been saving a honey hole for when my brother can hunt with us, tomorrow is it...fingers crossed no one else has tripped over it.

I know you always hear how we are losing hunters....seems hard to believe with all the guys out there this week. Even this morning there were a few other groups around, and I hunt off the beaten path!

crazy....one year I went there opening day and had it to myself. Limited in 4 minutes and decoyed 75-100 birds in a half hour of just watching. Couple years later I went back and we had arguments straight through from 3am until legal. 4 of us limited in short order that day as well, but I never went back for an opener because its not worth the fighting anymore.

Well I'm not complaining. I'm wondering if this crap economy has guys not able to afford to go or afford to take a day off.

school in the morning so i went in the afternoon after school we got on the water at three, and someone was in a spot so we put a good distance between us and set up. we only saw a few birds and no shots, but what was annoying was that he guys in the spot we wanted to hunt left 40 minutes before sunset, so we wouldn't have had enough time to set up there, and of course that where the ducks went.

i went out early thursday morning and had an awesome day, i will post some pics after school.

We didn't see alot of birds in the A.M. but the ones that came into the swamp where looking to land. Also I don't know where all the guys hunted but I saw more trucks then normal. The water was about a foot above normal so you couldn't get out very far in the big swamp. I think I might try on Sat. and get into some back holes.

The Resource being the last few hunters in CT.
I slept out in the swamp in my KARA to get a good spot. At 30 min before legal a canoe comes out of the woods and two guys set in 35 yards from me. Dumbfounded I say I slept here all night. They reply we put our decoys here yesterday and slept on the point on dry ground.
I cant stand hunting with a crowd any more and unlike the old days were I would have called a warden and fought it out, I left.
They shot it up big time.
I was cranked up for a short time about it but then I realized I had my dog and a bumper so when the high passing birds stopped at around 8:30 I worked the dog for a hour and looked over my pictures from the awesome sunrise.
Drove to breakfast and had not shot my gun.

Will post some photos soon.

I get the youth days for 3 kids now so I will have plenty of good cracks at the prime spots with out "Help". John and I head out Saturday to try again to kill his first bird. We shall see.

and that is why i dont bother taking opening day off from school. Bob i hope that is the only time you have to deal with that for the rest of the season

that is why i am up at 1 and set up by three 30. i beat a guy to a spot on thursday moring by an hour but he was gracious enough to turn around and say good luck, so to who ever that was thanks for being decent.

Too bad Bob. Good duck hunters are courteous. Others are not. Obviously, you can't "claim" a spot by putting out a few dekes & then sleeping on the shore somewhere else. Too bad to have put up with that crap on one a few days you are trying to relax and enjoy yourself.

Pete,
Nice to hear you had a good shoot. I was traveling on Wednesday so I hunted Thursday and Saturday. We managed 3 wood ducks and 2 mallards and that was only do to poor shooting. A lot of wood ducks around this year. With the mild weather in the forecast hopefully they will stick around for the first part of the season.
