Cutting Grass Rails

I have a MLB Chuck Huff. I want to trim the legs of the grassing rails so they are closer to the boat. I believe they are made of nylon..?? Any suggestions as to what type of saw/blade I should use? I'm hoping for a table saw blade so they are all uniform. Appreciate the help. Ken

Ken,

I would use a coarse tooth blade, not a fine tooth. You want to keep generated cutting heat to the bare minimun. Therefore use a fresh blade that is sharp. ATB style grind should be a good choice.

The ones I make are made from high density plastic. I use a good carbide tip blade on the table saw. Works fine.

I have an old South Bay boat whose wooden grass rails need to be replaced...what type of plastic do you use to make your rails? Any particular pattern in use? My boat has a one inch oak strip atop nylon spacers that are screwed through into the deck. Thanks!

I buy sheets of 1in. x 4ft. x 8ft. of high density black plastic with a pebble finish. I cut the sheet into sticks 1"x2"x4' From there I run them through the planer to size. Next I drill them. Then I router them in a jig. Finally I radius the edges. Simple right.

Ken,

Let me know how you do it. I want to drop the height on mine also. I don't want one of my dogs to get a paw caught heading out for a retrieve. Because with that boat, the dog is sure to get some feathers in his mouth.

Ron,

That is exactly why I want to trim mine. I have an AWS and I can see a leg getting stuck in there. I haven't put them on the boat yet for that reason. I will let you know.

I finally got the rails cut. I ended up using a fine blade hand saw. I measured, marked and managed to cut all but one leg very straight. Fastened them to the boat with the provided wood screws and each hole cas covered with Life Seal before the screw was placed. Worked out much better than I thought it would. The saw was a small orange handled job I picked up at Home Depot. Very pleased with the outcome. Put the dog on the boat and tried his paw for size, no way it will go thru. I cut each leg at 7/8".
