Daughter's Hunt this weekend

Dr. Story did a little scouting last week and found a few Mergansers in our duck deprived waters here in North Alabama. Their number and ease of access to the area they were using along with the abnormally warm weather made for the perfect situation to bring my daughter along. She did not want to shoot this time out but instead elected to sit and watch while Brian and I got a little humbeld by these fast moving saw bills. She had a blast, we got some trigger time and the dogs will have some training aids. What a great time and a memory for us both.

She thought their "mowhawks" were cool.

What a nice shot. Glad everyone had such a great time. I want to know if there were some giggles in the background when you guys missed the birds? By the way, those drakes are sure beautiful.
Shawn, it is 10F here this morning and I am wondering if I can brave those temps. I know that I need to give Habi some practice with ice since that is something new for her, so we will be heading out soon. Maybe this cold spell will get to you.

Tsk Tsk Shawn, them are right fine eaten my son,, I got into a herd of them a few shoots ago and never tried hoody before, tho we have eatin many a common merg one of our favs....Makayla and I that is ...Congrats on a great day out with your daughter. Mickey comes with us when ever hockey and school does not get in the way...Shes a straight A girl so i yank her out for hunting and fishing if i find a real good spot for some fun.....

Many years ago a fine gent here on this site, gave up some merg recipe`s and i have changed a few things from time to time and they are good to eat,,just as long as you take all the skin and fat off soak them in something acidy like orange juice ,pineapple juice even milk sometimes a day or 2 then cook them to medium and take off the heat they will cook the rest of the way by the time your bed of rice and veggies are ready....I usualy use a chicken flavoured instant package of 6 grain wild rice type thing it adds to the presentation...

Its funny When Mickey was little i came home with a mixed bag one day [woody, black, gwt, and a big male merg] soaked them all in pineapple juice 2 days changed the juice for second day and cooked them in the frying pan with a lid a little spices not to much and since that day she declared that the merg was her favorite , i couldnt believe she like it the most,,, so the other day we got one and i gave it to my buddy boy was she mad at me.....lol

All the best to you and yours
Shermie...

Thanks Guys! Shermie if our season continues as these first few weeks I may give you a shout about the merg recipes. Al we did hear a few "giggles" and got a few strange looks from Brian's dog Rosie (RoRo). I hope the cold winds bring some ducks for you and Habi. Shawn

The good times for sure. Doesn't matter the prey, being out with family and friends hunting is one of the better things in life. Congrats and thanks for sharing that with us.
