December Workbench

Good morning, Perry~

Tell us more! Do you know the history of that sweet little 'box?

Also, is the camp chair your creation?

All the best,

The batch I made is already spoken for. I don't have immediate plans to make another batch but definitely will in the future. Thanks.
Been a busy month Christmas orders and commissions coming off the bench like crazy. Here's a group of canvasback. I took out and got a picture on the coldest morning so far this year.

I wasn't satisfied with last years gunning coffin build. They were plain jane with no canvas, the way my family did it pretty much forever. This year, I re-learned how to sew making a dodger for the BBSB pond box. It seemed like the right move to enhance the coffins, so here we are. I also gave in to my worst impulse, that being to create foot space as most adult feet won't fit under and 11 1/2" deck without being splayed out a little. The idea with these coffins is to grass the canvas, then toss wrack on the deck. The canvas is snapped on all around so it can be removed. My sewing skill is still suspect, we won't delve too deep into fit and finish.

Bending the frames was an interesting experiment. I used 3/4 EMT. Instead of bending it on a mold like usual I did it by hand by putting it between two boards space about 24" apart and bending by hand a little at a time. Feel a tiny bend, advance the pipe an inch and repeat. It worked surprisingly well, no kinks and the bends are pretty even.

One bummer was that I ran out of snaps, so coffin #2 only got 1/2 as many snaps as coffin #1. This was a result of buying snaps from my local West Marine, box says 40 snaps. Not 40 pieces, 40 sets. OK, 20 each should do but stupid me didn't count ahead of time. The box had 26 button studs, with 31 bottom pieces. I had all the holes punched on #1 before I realized the shortage. I had a few laying around from the pond box so I scraped by on #2. What a mess, they can't even count the parts in a bubble wrap. I'm guessing they don't care either.
