Here in Utah clear cedar is a rare beastie and to order it takes an act of divine intervention. Redwood is readily available at both locally owned lumber yards and the orange big box. It is not cheap but you can walk in and buy 2x2, 2x4 though 2x8, 4x4, and sometimes 4x6 stock. It would have to be laminated to an acceptable dimension for a decoy.

Some of the redwood is very clear.

Anyone every try it?

You will want to wear a dust mask with redwood. I haven't carved it but have done plenty of western red cedar and the two are suppose to be alike in many ways. There are reasons those woods don't rot very fast and it isn't good to breath too much of that in.
