Decoy carving

This forum has been great for me and I greatly appreciate it! It has really sparked my interest in carving my own cork decoys! I was just wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction, as I have no experience at all with carving! Just bought a boat, and I guess you could say all I do in my spare time now has to do with duck hunting! Would it be best for someone to take me under their wing, because I do know a guy that does them, or should I just order a starter kit! Thanks in advance

A mentor to get you started in the right direction is priceless. If there is someone near you that is willing to teach by all means take them up on it.

Brad - Welcome to the wild and wooly world of making your own decoys. There is lots of satisfaction and enjoyment to be had in our craft. And, you meet some great people.

The starter kit from Willy at the duckblind is money well spent. Also, visit our new website at www.thedecoyshed.org We are posting up how to videos all the time.

Welcome to the club! Pat

Thanks guys, Pat the decoy she'd is very helpful! I will probably be tuning in to that site a lot more! I guess the same way he carves the wooden ones he does the cork?

clear the new hobby through the management prior to even thinking about it. read on the net of course, go to the library and read a few books. Think about it for a bit and how you might want to carve a bird, or what you want to accomplish by carving. At that point start gathering supplies as needed, as mentioned Willy (theduckbind) is a great supplier and teacher. Find a carver near you and go watch them carve a bird. Heck they may cut something out and let you get it bloody. There are carvers in Kentucky and you are not far from others in Ohio.

Brad, if your wanting to get involved in the madness I think I could help. I haven't been doing it long but I have the basic tools plus some, as I bought one of the DB kits when I started, I have the DVD tutorial as well.

I'm going to be ordering some cork here soon, but at least I could get a head cutout for you and you can start there. I'm sure Randy would help you too.

As others said there is a wealth of knowledge on the subject between this and other forums, as well as places like the Decoy Shed.

If your interested let me know and I'll see what I can do to help.

Cody, that would be great! Randy stays busy a lot so I hate to bother him! It would be nice if we could all get together sometime and try to do a bunch! I guess I'll see ya Cody at the dinner on the 5th! Thanks
