Decoy cork ????

Going to attempt to carve my own gunning decoys. I read the post a few months ago about what your top books about carving would be, I went and bought a few and read them. I think I'm ready to make an attempt. I bought a piece of Basswood, looks like I can get 4 heads out of it (with room to spare). I would like to attempt a head first, then move onto the body. My question is where is the best place to get cork for the body? What is a good price? And, what about quality?

Any help would greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Francy,
Look up Willie McDonald at The Duck Blind. You can google his site up. He is by far the best source for cork.

Francy:
A small note that may help you in the long run. When you carve a head, make sure you have a body to go along with it. I know they're two pieces, but they go together to make one carving. They are integral to each other and should be carved at the same time. The tendency is to overcarve the head and then when it's time to mate it to the body, not enough material remains to provide a smooth transition into the breast.

Good luck!

No More Runamuck Cork. I think they are looking but nothing has come up yet. Chesapeake Cork in Elkton, MD(big chunks) and Jelink(heard various reports) are the only others. I just went through the search. After my current case of cork, I might be looking to drive up north and buy a load of cedar and make the switch.

OK, thanks for the help, guys.

I'd love to get out to ohio this weekend, but, I'm kind of busy and it's about a 6 hr drive from my home. I live in NE Pa. So, do you think I should start working on the body before the head? Also, I have a question about this Basswood I bought. I was a 6x6x18" block. I cut a part off so that I could use for a head. It seems to me that it is wet. First let me explain that I never saw Basswood before. This block is heavy and it seems to have a waxy texture to it. Is that the way it is supposed to be or do you think it is wet wood. Don't know if I should use it or let it sit and dry.
Thanks.

If you know someone from PA that is coming to Weslake see if that will pick up a sheet for you. I know that we have a bunch of pre-orders form PA guys. AND we ship to PA all the time. www.theduckblind.com
