Decoy Molds

I have found a great resource for decoy molds. He has anything you could want.

I sent him a giant scoter decoy that a friend of mine made over 30 years ago. He is making me a mold of it but he has added a keel in it like the old heaters style decoys.
 
No he sells them on Ebay. If you have him make a mold for you he will require permission to copy and sell them as well. you can also find him on working decoys forum i think.
 
Here is his contact info. Never had anything built by him or dabbled in molding but everyone seems to be very happy with his work that I have talked to.

Actually I looked yesterday and he has a FacePage (but who doesn't...that is besides me). I don't know the guy, but assuming he is a businessman, I'm sure if you were having a mold made and you did not want him to make additional molds for sale, that should be negotiable. In other words, he's making your mold more affordable by reserving the tight to sell more of them to cover his costs of developing the first mold (yours).

I don't know the guy, but assuming he is a businessman, I'm sure if you were having a mold made and you did not want him to make additional molds for sale, that should be negotiable. Chuck I agree with you, problem is he copies anything and everything regardless if where it can from or who's it may be. I made that mistake a long time ago. And learned the hard way. Just saying,

The question really is, if someone gives him a decoy to make a mold of, does the customer actually have rights to have one mold made, much less sign away permission for him to make unlimited more molds to sell off? Does he actually ask the customer if they have the rights to sign away?
 
And I believe he assumes the liability, since he actually makes the copy, not the person asking.
Risky business.
Ask the people who ran Napster and other music file sharing sites.....
 
When I got home tonight, my Burpy Frog Sleeping Scaup mold was here. I generally like it…I think it will work. The parting line is less than perfect…but since I use an orbital sander to remove any mold release, it is not a big deal.

I have a couple of his molds that I bought off eBay. They are not perfect but these are working decoys. When they get shot up toss them and make new ones.
I have tried 4lb and 8lb. The 8lb is good if you don't want to burlap them but they are heavy. I found that the 4lb with burlap is the way to go.
US composite has a wax paste that is very good. Getting the paint to stick to the heads is my only problem. So if anyone has a suggestion I'm all ears.

He also does ask where the original came from and if he can sell the mold after its done.
 
I use canuba wax and 8# foam. I buzz over all painted surfaces with a sander to remove any release agent. Takes about a minute to do a head and body. I use an orbital sander. This is what I have done to help paint to stick. I am attempting flocking with the ones I am making this year.
 
As a total outsider to the realm of decoy making can I ask about what it's costing per decoy after the molds are purchased? I have been getting by repainting old mallards to put together somewhat of a bigger diver spread and then supplementing with commercial decoys. I've tossed around the idea of foamers as I have no carving talent and my pockets aren't deep enough for a spread of commercial plastic let alone cork dekes. After molds were purchased what would you say it costs per dozen before paint? Can't seem to work up a price because I'm not sure how much material is used per decoy etc. Thanks in advance to anyone who offers an answer.
