decoy poles?

I know there are lots of talented decoy carvers on here. but i hunt plastic(i know sinful and wrong) im curious about adding motion decoys to my rigg this year they all seem too mount too 1/2 in conduit. With water hight varying where i hunt between 6 inches too several feet up too about 25 feet. Just curious what others have done too get varying hights out of conduit. and storage ideas for smaller boats for the conduit any help appreciated
 
Scott - i'm a plastic hunter myself....no talent on the carving end of the spectrum. Carved a mallard one time that was the size of a teal and looked more like a coot to me.....hell it floats better upside down, but it's in my bag none the least. I use a MOJO mallard and a WONDER DUCK mallard. The WONDER DUCK floats and can be set on a pole. The MOJO just on the pole. The water I hunt is varying depths depending on rain and how much the swamps are filled up from 1-2 ft. to 20 ft. I Carry three lengths of poles. A 4 ft., 8ft., 12ft. They are made of copper but thats what I had around the house. There is probably enough money in scrap copper to buy 5 dozen decoys. I tried PVC but it's too flimsy especially the longer lengths. I normally would only recommend a 4 ft. and 8 ft. at the tallest. Anything deeper I just put out the WONDER DUCK and heck with the MOJO.

Ah I see not everyone is a purist, "Plastic Hunters unite".
Actually they're not plastic they're constructed of "nearly indestructible polyethylene" and thats a direct quote fro Cabelas. Undoubtedly there are lots of lower end crappy looking plastic decoys out there. But the Greenhead Gear decoys are very life like. They look alot better than Flambeau.

Probably the best motion decoy is a simple jerk string set up with one or two decoys on it. They are easy to make and are very effective. I am making a new set up this weekend for our little woodie and teal hole for the opener on Monday. I can take some pics and post.

I carve decoys but hunt with plastics for long walkin spots. Cork and cedar are too heavy to carry more than half a mile!

No need to apologize for hunting over plastic, that is all I use except for some y-boards I made.
As far as motion in the spread, I'd go with a jerk string and a coulple of feeder butts.

No problem with plastic decoys if that is what you like. Motion decoys, however, are not viewed highly by most here.

I talked to Dave Parks the other day,after a wild day in a loyout blind on a muddy point.They bagged just about every species of duck and a few geese.His friend set up a MO-JO mallard and they had a Perigrin falcon dive on it.I guess a duck wouldn't be too hard to fool if it works on Falcons.
I hunt plastic mainly for weight and I don't carve.No inclination, too old to start,and too expensive to buy enough to get started with a diver rig.At Tuckerton,I did handle a hollow cedar lifesized deke that was comprable to plastic,but it didn't have a keel or weight attached as yet.The tan cork works up nice and smooth.We'll see.
 
Scott, I use both Herters foam dekes and GHG. The GHG are outstanding and affordable. I don't carve either, at least not yet. I also use a Mojo early in the season at a small lake and on a local river with great success. This is out of nescesity as the other hunters in the area are using them and if I don't I just don't get the action that they do. I use a 4', 1/2" alluminum conduit to which I bolted the Mojo pole. If the water is too deep on the river I just clear the grass on the bank, preferably on a point, and place it as close to the water as possible. I know this is'nt natural but it still pulls them in.
 
thanks for the replies guys i guess i will clarify myself though. i am not talking mojos or robo ducks, just a win duk or two and a wing majic i think its called flaps the wings in the water too create movement all pull cord or wind powered.
 
Scot, you could also carry a couple of lengths of 1/2" and some of those metal conduit couplers - they have a slotted screw on both ends that you can use to couple lenghts of conduit. You could mix and match to meet your fluctuating water depth.

Should be something you can get at the local general purpose hadware store...
