well here is the first phase of a two part project- Yukon mike is making the surf scoters- these are the White wings- and a single Quandy- the rest to be made later- ( HINT HINT Geoff Pike)- I had these roughed out for me in New Jersey- anyone want the name of a good decoy carver- let me know- - not to slight Yukon Mike ---Jameson and I worked on carving-sanding- prep for paint-all the fine details- its a snowy day here in the Northeast so we finished up today with the Quandy and rigged them all-

he is just a blast to work with- he is so enthustiastic- and loves to paint- the decoys- the table - the floor- the dog- me -himself-

this is a great project- the pattern is from a Joe Lincoln coot i own and its 16" long- 9" wide and 6" deep- rides very well-

he was 1 month old and was in a scull boat- he has spent more time in a gunning float than most guys i know- he loves the dory- and at five years has been two miles off shore handlining for ground fish last summer- so yes he is a blue water man-

we use to sail when i had my farm on the lake- but have not since we moved back to the coast-in fact he has his own skiff-

he is a good kid- honest and just a joy to be around!!-- loves duck camp-

yes we got about 8" here in kennebunk- but the winds are gale force today- they opened school- so no more duck stuff till later-

i have to head down to the harbour and shovel out the dory-

have fun- were are you- you must have some winter weather to deal with??

Southwest Ohio. We had some ice storms that closed school for a few days, so I got the time to get in the shop and get a start on this woodie to add to my rig (no school = no work; I'm a HS counselor). Body shape influenced by the palm-fronds sent to me from CA earlier this year (but made from cork).

You are an artist Bob. That woodie is amazing. I added a pic of my little one for Donald. He's going to be a retriever trainer, I'm sure.

When you make a cork decoy with the neck stretched out like that (swimmers, callers, drinkers, etc.), how do you attach the head? Do you have a picture of the bare cork and wood? Do you dowel or reinforce on a duck like this?

great looking kid- he likes his dog? my son likes to work our dog- a choc. zlab- in fact he named it- Brown- its full name is Jameson Brown Dog-

they are a pair- its great to have my boy involved-

the decoy is awesome- it makes the ones we did look quite childlike- you are a great decoy maker- i love the pose- and the paint- wow-

Donald, We have a chocolate as well, "Wood Duck's Nemisis", we just call him Woody. My P/C crashed recently and I lost all of my good pics, or I would post one, but his father is Marshmutts Boot Scootin' Cuda, and his Grandfather was Barracuda Blue, "The legend". Sufice it to say that Woody is no legend, but he usually gets my ducks for me. That's good enough.
 
yes- mine dog have always benn meat dogs- we had chessies for many many years- in fact my grandfather was a schooner capt. out of Glous. mass- and in the 20s he was sailing from MD to Glous. with a load of wood- he saw something bobbing in the water 2 or so miles off shore- it was a chessie chasing a wounded coot- he had it brought on board- named in Brutus- they had chessies ever since- dad had them- i had two- but my boy wanted this dog- so- you can not say no to a 5 yr old- brown good- he and i worked this yr at camp- he liked jump shooting- he retrieved 34 blacks- not bad for a 8 month old dog- he worked ok in the boat- summer time we will work out the bugs- but again- i shoot- i say dead bird- he runs- gets it brings it back- thats it- no fancey hand signels- heck - it would confuse me!!!

Chuck - Hardwood dowel through the bottom board and into the head.

I'm already balking at returning the Wigeon decoy to Mark...heck I've had three different boxes to ship it in and...oooooppppssss....recycled them ACCIDENTALLY and you posting pictures of birds like this Wood Duck will make it even harder to even look for a box to send him back in....

Of course Mark hasn't returned any of my e-mails or phone calls in a week so maybe I'll just pretend I'm holding his decoy "hostage" till he does....

Seriously sweet Wood Duck....make sure you post pictures of it when its done...

OH, and I do have pictures of your decoy with its "intended" and also "slumming" with a couple of those trashy Greenheaded birds that couldn't resist his presence in the Brant rig on the last weekend of the season....I'll post them as soon as I figure out how to shrink them to a size that I like well enough to post...

I will definitely be referring to this picture in the future. I'm only on my second bird now, but I have a sheet of cork cut up into 11 block and they are in the midst of getting bottom boards and tail boards. I really like the personality that the different head positions gives but wasn't sure on your bird where the cork ends and the wood (head) begins. You cleared it up!
