Decoy Rack

I redid the decoy racks on my BBSB last year. I used pine and primed it and painted it. After a year in the elements it is toast. Any thoughts on what type of wood I should have used or is it the paint? I used Parker with and undercoat of Kilz exterior primer.

Frank, is this a year in the brutal Florida sun? I used cedar and mahogany. FME paint. I hope mine last longer! I don't/won't leave mine out in the elements though. Keeping the boat dry and shaded will make it last much longer! Post up some pictures so we can see what failed, and it might offer better suggestions?

Mine are red oak and going on 5 years.

Next time you build an outdoor wood product saturate the wood with a thinned epoxy or a penetrating epoxy, use Titebond III or epoxy for glue, and non-rusting fasteners. Then prime, paint, or varnish as needed with quality products (mostly not those from the Orange Big Box place). Pine is ok when it is protected from the elements. Most paint failures are caused by UV and water getting into the substrate (wood in this case), then it is just a matter of time until failure.
