Decoy

This one is on loan from my father in-law while I build him a new garage / shop. It was has Dad's and he thinks probably from the early 50's. Apparently there was a few bushel baskets of these laying around for years but he doesn't know what ever happened to them. He told me I could have them if they ever found them. But they recently sold their business where he thought they were stored and never found any when they cleaned the place out.

These I got from my Mom. She found them in someone's trash. They had been turned into lamps. You can see the holes bored through them where they ran the wire. Very similar but some slight differences in the head carving.

Both have the heads doweled on and what looks like copper staples or wire to attach an anchor.

These came out of my grandmothers clothing store. I don't know anything about them. They are two piece but solid. Definitely seen some weather.

I found this little guy at an estate sale. Unfortunately he had his nose chewed off. Only cost me $3 though.

This is another one I found at a different estate sale. I found the body and head on different tables when I was looking around. Got it for $4 and glued the head back on when I got home. I like the pose of this bird.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from decoy auctions and gatherings. You will be broke, constantly looking for more to add to your collection and eventually you may be a clinically diagnosed horder of decoys or in the instance you are in denial-a collector. Toward the end, even your wife will not know when you bring more decoys home, however, you will know each and everyone as intimately as though your child.

Good luck.

The look on that first Black is just wonderful - what dignity! And, since he has to be staked down to keep him in check, he must have a wild spirit.

All the best,

SJS

Looks like a good grouping of waterfowling history there. I like them all, and yes I am a Decoy Addict but for the most part have it under control...
