Hello All

After a super opening day duck season here in NYS for me and my son. Hunting hasn't been that great on the mighty Hudson River. First of all I hate the season the way it is set. Call me old school but running the season this way isn't any good for any duck hunter. For those hunters that have been around for a little bit ! I'm sure you agree with me. The early birds get shot at and leave the area. The start of the migration hasn't reached us yet. Makes people not want to go out on the water hunting.A guy like me is still going to go. But those who are starting out are not going to stick with it. Those who love it but not like us are going to pick the days they go. Split seasons are great when they are split the right way. Closing the season on November 29 that has been running from October 17 . Then reopening it on December 5 until the 20 of December its just fools gold. The river was full of geese when goose was closed and slim when it was open. There was geese but not like when it was closed. Another thing that makes me mad as heck. Here we can only shot two geese . But a few miles as the goose flies up the road you can get five. Those same geese fly right over us at some point. Maybe I'm crazy in my old age. But I'm just doing the math. Two geese isn't really worth putting out all your decoys. Unless your hunting with ten guys or so. Okay I feel a little better now. Sorry!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway didn't have much better luck opening day deer season. In a place where I have tons of deer on camera. Nothing came by opening day. Blue Jays and squirrels were the game of the day. The day before there were forty turkeys in the same area. Nothing. Six nice bucks on camera nothing. Not even a doe. Weather is everything if your asking me. Hope all of you are safe and are having better hunting days then me. But you can't take opening day of duck season away. That will carry me and my son for years to come.

Just be glad your not limited to one goose like we are on Eastern Shore of Md. Our dark goose season doesn,t start now till Dec. 10. I normally always sit out 4 goose decoys even when goose isn,t in and every morning i,ve been out after ducks have had geese in the decoys. One morning called in a pair without a goose decoy in site. Swimming around 10 yds. from blind. Residents i,ll assume but its still fun messing with them. No shortage of dark geese in my neck of the woods and our present season limits and start dates are not something i,m not fond of . Can,t wait till the 10th!

Roy,

There are relatively very few geese here in the Choptank area. We live just off Island Creek and in normal years when traveling in and out of the Creek this time of year to fish out in the River, the creek is full of geese. There are just a handful at this time. I was hoping to see an influx of birds on the cold front a few days ago, but it didn't happen. Hope they arrive soon!

Anthony, we have a early season to lower the resident goose population. Not to many guys hunting then. Raise the bag limits for the first split, when everyone is out there hunting.

As always your spot on. The birds are there and the hunters will come if they are around. Makes good since to me. More hunters will hunt, more money will go to help wetlands. And the number of birds will still be fine. I understand you have to let birds fly threw. But the way it is now isn't going to help anything. Thanks Capt.

Sorry about the one bird limit. You love the sport like I do. I want whats best. But the hunter should always the eyes of the government. He or she knows best as far as number of birds when and where they are in their area. That is how it use to be. When they took the task force out of the season setting. They still give input but the States don't have to follow it. Thanks

2020 has been the year of if it can happen it will. Mostly bad!!!. But your luck is going to change soon I feel it. Get ready for some good hunting days. Thanks

Anthony,

Strange days indeed...

In all my years of deer hunting, so far this season is a head scratcher. It's as if the season came in, and the no one told the hunters, or the deer. In my 11 seasons in NY, so far this is the least amount of hunters I have seen, and it's Thanksgiving week.

During Sept & Oct. I saw more deer in the woods, and fields than any other game. Once crossbow came in, it's as if the earth swallowed up the deer. With no snow, and not having snow to knock down cover, deer are doing the Big Rabbit thing, that they DO so well. I am SEEING deer, but not where they need to be for a successful shot. I must admit it does feel good to do this kinda hunting. Keeps me on my toes.

In our rural valley a person can hear shooting from miles around. So far this season very little shooting. It's a long season, and I enjoy it no matter how it begins.

As far as waterfowl, they be even more scarce. Took a look see today, where there are usually many Canada geese. Well, they be somewhere else also.

You are correct. The Blue Jay migration is on, lots of em in the woods burying acorns.

We just gotta keep on gettin' "Out There", cuz sooner or later things will be on the up swing. God Willing.

Be safe, good hunting & Happy Thanksgiving

Your so right, things are so different in 2020. Maybe I had my mask on to long and have not taken in enough air. I will never give up until the Lord tells me too. So I too will be out there on the water in the woods. If I get one its a plus ! if I see some its a plus, If they are flying its a good day. If they are in the decoys its a great day. Being on earth is a wonderful thing. So sorry if I sounded like a downer in this post. Its great to be alive. Happy Turkey Day my Friend.
