Delaware Swans

This was a permit onlyevent, and luckily, I drew a permit. We set up in a field that my buddy knew swans were using, and once the fog lifted, they flew. Result was two tagged, one adult, one youngster, who probably was at least a year old, as opposed to the juvenile in grey plumage, and one adult. A fun outing, for sure.
Steve, eons ago, I scrounged some of that stuff from guys who were re-grassing/ Figured it might prove useful for snows on a rye field. Problem is the little strings that hold the green together get tangled in everything. Too different than the field coloration, so it will likely be disposed of, asap!
A good idea that just did not bear fruit. It did keep me off the wet field, though!

George,

Congrats on an excellent hunt. I may have to try to draw an out of state permit if that is possible? For next year, tundra swan is high on the bucket list. I?ve also heard that mute swan hunting is allowed whenever an open waterfowl season is taking place, is that true?

Congrats George! No matter how many times I see someone holding one of those I'm impressed by their size. Must feel like you are taking down an aircraft when they absorb 12 gauge flack.

Eric

Ya did good Decoy Monster Machine.

Congratulations!

If yer gonna keep that Swan as a study bird, yer gonna need a bigger freezer.[;)]

Best regards
Vince

Mutes are imported, therefore, not subject to the migratory treaty .
Eric, I recalled a comment made by a dear old friend regarding large birds
--"Shoot at the part in front that kind of resembles a teal!" I did, and it fell out, similar to following the same directions regarding sandhills.
Incidentally, there were NO pellets from breast to tail. I guess it worked.
It was a fun adventure, one I hope to try again some time.[;)]

Rich, we hunted over about a dozen swan floaters and a kindred number of oversize snows, with bills repainted. If we were in layout blinds as opposed to just laying out in white, we would have been covered up with live Tundras. Years ago, on a conservation snow hunt, we were amazed at the number of swans that flew over us, less than ten yards up, landing just outside the snow rig. I counted at least three with double bands. Damn things sounded like 747's on a glide path! HEHEHHE

may have been set up for sod this spring. The folks who grow that are only too happy to extend permission when snows get on the property, also.
